Getting the Wheeling Fever
hopefully the 12 bolt locker will become available if by chance one for the 10 bolt front becomes available how prone to any type of breakage will be expected to the cv`s or is the front typicle stout isuzu with little worry?

From what I understand the front 10 bolt isn't the weak link of the IFS system (correct me if I'm wrong) but that the CV's are, so if we put a locker in and eliminate one of the giving points that stops parts from breaking then the forces that be are going to the next part down the line. It also must be put into consideration about the amount of lift on your truck. 3 inches of lift is gonna put some serious angles on them.

If need be you could always bring some CVs to one of those shops that build bulletproof CVs for the Civic boys and pay big $$$.....but that may be a bit extreme.

I've got a front lockright, but haven;t played hard yet. I think the tierods should be the main concern. On high traction surfaces, the locked front forces the tires to tun inward. My trooper looks almost pigeon toed at times.

Also, I think the CVs are less likely to break on a locked vehicle. Every CV that i've seen blow out on an isuzu was related to spiing tire that finally caught soem traction. Others on the board will strong disagree with me on that one.

ANyway, the front lockright is a great upgrade, especially if you frequent loose or wet surface terrain.

95 Passport, auto, 3.2 ltr w/lockright, 3 inch lift, running 33x12.5 MT/rs
Traction-exceptional
On the highway in snow-down right dangerous
Offroad in the snow and mud-excellent
CV breakage-NEVER (and I abuse the crap out of mine) Most folks that I see breaking CV's are because they don't know when to quit, back up, and try a different line. They just give it more gas.
Tie-rod durability )good if you have tie-rod shields. If you don't.....carry plenty of spares and know how to change them out.
CV boots-brutal I'm at the point now that I don't even change them out until enough grime gets into the axle to cause it to click. Are there better boots. NO, I think I tried them all. In fact the most expensive one blew out the first trip going down a flat no obstacle road. (YES, I know how to install them properly). my 2 cents

Off-topic but have you tried the Mecatech boots? Asking cuz I'm getting new CVs soon and plan on putting those boots on, but if they even broke fast I may have to rethink things.

Uhh... I broke a meca tech and that is exactly what Jeff (paddler) is referring to. No they don't work, its all the same story. My personal opinion. Just ride em till they start clicking then change the CV outer entirely.

That's the "expensive boot" that blew out the first trip. Buy the cheapo's and make sure that there is about an inch to an inch and a half between the two smaller ends when you tighten them down. This will give it a little less stress when that inner race is working outward.

back on topic................on the lockrights.

i think there is a decent amount of product support that can help the IFS out when running the front locker. support that was not available a few years ago when the 10 bolt locker was on the market.

i am thinking the use of the "drop diff" brackets to lessen CV angles, Dallas's HD tie rods he has been working on, and i think other Beefier steering componants could follow as the need arises.

Bottom Line is this locker is a very good....COST effective...alternative to Locking the front and rear.

you really have to consider a lot of the country really NEVER has to drive in 4wd on the street. the weather doesn't call for it.

it all depends on where you live, what your truck is used for, blah, blah.................personal circumstances.

just saying i think it's hard to make blanket statements and lay it down in Balck and White. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
