I meant no offense with the 'stupid' comment. I have done a lot of brake jobs in my life, but only one (before this) was a rear disc setup--my 95 Nissan Maxima has rear discs with a lever/cam that works the caliper. None of the half dozen guys who saw the rear brakes on my Trooper had ever seen anything like it. I'm still not sure if the design is brilliant or... not.

For the archives and anyone who may in the future be searching for advice on this topic:

Get an impact driver. If you are unfamiliar with this device, it's basically a screwdriver that you operate with a hammer. Rent one, buy one, borrow one, whatever. Without an impact driver, I'd still be sitting on the floor of my Uncle's barn staring at my Trooper on jackstands. With an impact driver, the hub nut lock screws came out easily.

Buy new hub nutlock screws. The ones I got were from NAPA and they are straight slot vs. the OEM phillips-head screws. IMO, you can exert a lot more torque on a straight slot screw than a phillips head. Regardless of the head style, new screws will be a welcome sight the next time you do this job--especially if you don't have an impact driver!

I was unable to locate the correct snap ring to replace the c-clip. If you could find a snap ring with eyes to replace the c-clip, I'd imagine that it would be one more step made a little easier the next time. I think I read somewhere that the c-clip is 22mm. I am certain that there's room for a more traditional snap ring.

Oh, and forget the special hub nut tool--a screwdriver works fine.

Thanks again for all of your help, fellows.

[quote]I have a PDF of the actual Isuzu manual for a 95 Trooper if you want to take a look. It is a rather large file (73Meg).

If you do get it, get the one that is labeled service manual. The other ones will not help you.

Good Luck,
michael

Here is the exploded view from pg 318.

Do you know where I can get a .PFD manual for a 91 Trooper?

I think I read somewhere that the c-clip is 22mm.

It is 26mm or 1 1/16" Either will work, the later one is a bit easier to find.

I had to order a 1 1/16" retainer clip, I just got it today, it took a week, not a very common size so you may have to order it.

I ordered my clips from St. Charles. I think 2 of them cost around $3.

I just finished changing front and rear rotors on my 2000 Trooper. Together with repacking front bearings and changing seals it took me 6 hrs. Well the job was not that bad, it took me three hrs for front left side because when I was ready to install the ABS ring I noticed that all three holes were not threaded all the way through. That required trip to parts store for a tap. Overall with all right tools on hand it should take about 1 hr per side.
Long day, but all four corners are done, cross drilled and slotted.
