I own my baby (Troop in sig) but I was driving to work and noticed a black '95 parked by an office building. So I stopped today after work.
Its a '95 w/ 87K Miles, Stock as a rock, Tinted windows, stock stereo, emaculant condition, auto tranny.
Im thinking this will be fun, luxurious (Compared to my 1st Gen) and more reliable since it has more than 100K miles less than my 1st gen. I called about it and he didn't know anything mechanical. All its life (Well since he bought it from a car lot) nothing has died, and he took it to a trusted mechanic locally.
He said blue book was just over $8k for it (Havnt verified) so he is asking $6995 OBO. Upon talking to him he said he could work with $6500, less $100 if I do some computer/network consulting for him.
Would this be a good price?
Now...Here is where I need advice. Im 17, 18 in less than a month. My current job (Lasts til June) pulls in about $400 a month. This dosnt include the fluctuating income from websites I do on the side. I would have to get a loan, and the guy helped me estimate that it would be around $200/Month for about 3 years to pay off the loan. Come June though I will be pulling in about $1600/Month which is alot more doable.
So whats your opinion? Get the loan, learn financial responsibility, eat beans, and build credit. Or pass this baby up and look come June with the new job?

try seeing if you can do a "family loan" then payments are more flexible, thats what i do. Just my .02, sounds like a nice trooper tho.

$6,500 is too much, even with 87k miles and in great condition. Check out edmunds.com, or look at traderonline.com, to see what other Troopers are going for.
Even being a nice rig, you could get a '98 or '99 for $6,500. The 3.5L has 215 HP, vs 175 in the 3.2L.
$5,000 is as high as I'd go for the '95. Troopers do not hold their value, and you can get one for cheap.
Good luck!

I agree with Bucket on the price. There are better deals to be had. It is also my personal preference to avoid commiting to a car note, but that's your business. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

It is also my personal preference to avoid commiting to a car note, but that's your business. Woah that lost me buddy! Well I checked bluebook, but its hard because I forgot exactly what features it had, and what version (S, LS, SE, etc...) of Troop it was. I toyed with it (Blue Book) and got it around $5k which is do able. What is a safe APR to assume with a loan? I know it depends on your credit or your co-signers, but whats a good # to ballpark?

First I agree with everyone else in saying that tht 5k is top dollar for a 95. ANd even that would be pushing it.
I waited a while and got ahold of my 93 for 2k, already had 33s and a 3 in bl on it....along with 212k miles..
As far as the APR...I dunno whats out there now, but I belong to a GREAT CU, and my max APR is some like 5.25%. BUt, I am a stinghy , cheap sonnofa*&^&%$. So, offer the guy around 4500, adn work up from there, if he wont bargain, even at the book value, that means he got suckered into a loan(probably), You wanna pay that much, c'mon on down to VaBch, we got 98s ghoing for that all day long....

He paid about $8k Cash off the lot no more than 2 Months ago. He wont take payments because they bought it for thier 17 yr old daughter, she ended up getting 3 tickets, causing insurance to go to $375/Month on it. So they are getting rid of it and using the Trooper sale money to buy her a Hyundai.
I will stop by today and see if it is an LS. I want to say it is...Ill also write down exactly everything it has and Blue Book it and work from their.

I saw another post about Credit Unions, by all means, join one, probably the best rates you'll find for loans, credit cards etc. Plus many of them have options on their car loans where you can skip a payment a year if things get tight for you!
Also, they're very friendly and customer oriented. If you tell them what you're looking at, the loan officer will work up a Blue Book cost for you on their stationery. Then you can show it to the seller and say, 'This is what my bank will loan me for it'. Kind of hard for him to argue with that.
Prepare yourself for if he won't deal and just walk away. You can always leave your number in case he decides to come down.
