I can't see a think rubbery sprayed-on layer absorbing sound and heat as well as carpet with a 1/4 thick pad underneath. Carpet just seems like a better sound deadener. Don't forget, the carpet and pad doesn't just prevent sound from coming into the cab, it also absorbs all the reflected sound once it is inside. With line-x, any sound that makes it inside the cab is just going to bounce around like you are driving a tin can on wheels.

I DON't have any good experience to lend you, but you could always pull the carpet and pad, since you might have to do that anyway with your wiring project and take a spin around the block sitting on a milk crate, just to listen to the road noise. Then if you think you can live with it, you know you can start doing line-x and any combination of lining methods. That's what I'd do, to make sure I liked it.

Man, i used to drive around with no shifter boot and it sounded like I had no floor, can't imagine not having carpet what it would sound like.

Yeah I did mine a couple of years back. When I pulled my carpet I saw all the rigges and uneveness that you are talking about. I poured foam and sanded all that down nicwe and smooth. Then I exposied with some cloth all over it. I then uesed that cheap rolled on bed liner. As for the wires I ran them all under the trooper in wire loom and pop them through the floor where they need to come up at. I used them u clamps to secure the wires in the looms underneath the trooper.

With all that I did on my trooper I do have alot more noise and heat coming in my trooper. I would think that the line-X would help some and I am planning on going that route with mine. The thing is that the rolled on stuff that I got is thin and hard as a rock. The line-X stuff is thick and stays almost rubbery. The only down fall would be cleaning it. I had my bummber spraied with the line-X and they looked real nice but you could never get the dirt stains out of all them little pits. I talk to my friend that sprays line-X here in town and he said that he can spay it slick so I will proably get him to do that to mine so I can clean alot easier.

Later,
Daniel

I ripped out the carpeting in the back of my trooper , and lo and behold , found a couple of rust holes So , I picked up some heavy aluminum sheet metal( from wood stove piping through a roof) , patched up the holes , sealed them , put new carpet down and bought my self a cargo liner for the back from a 94 trooper , only had to modify it a little to make it fit.Now the back is all rubber coated up top , and the holes were fixed and sealed.I pulled the carpet up in a couple spots in the front , and it was ok , the passenger side was a little wet , had a leaky window seal , so dried that out , then bought some cheap rubber mates for there.Cheap easy fixes work great If you can keep soem kind of carpet in there its a good thing , just cover it up.Another option you might want to look at is what I had done to the interior of my work van.I had boat insulation foam(it hardens when it drys) sprayed all over the bare metal. This is like insulating it , keeps the road noise down and the condensation that was always building up on cool days and then dripping later.I think this would fix both your heat isssues and road noise issuses if you put it under some kind of rubberized bed liner spray as it looks just plain ugly by itelf , and it tends to flake if you rub it Just something you might want to look into through a boat place.

I watched very intently the episode on Trucks about doing the interior of the wicked willys.

As I recall they sanded and cleaned up the floor a bit (after which I think they painted) but you could rhino line or whatever, and then they made a custom fitted plywood board which they laid over the entire back of the truck conforming to the wheel wells nicely. This board they lightly padded then carpeted. It turned out nice because when they needed to haul stuff they had a fully functional bed but still had the ability to quiet it down with carpet for the day to day its winter and I don't want my truck to stink feel.

One problem with putting wood down , wood can get wet , then start to rot.Unless you use treated wood , and then that can start to get expensive. If I find my carpet in the front get ratty , I think my first option would be to go with what I did in the van , that foam insualtion , then some bed liner spray , and then some of that all weather carpet that can take water and stuff , easy to clean too. That would solve the problem of noise , heat , and also no worries about it getting wet and nasty. If your not in an area like me where we get lots and lots of rain , or you don't go anywhere wet , then , wood could be a viable option.Just speaking from experience as my last van had wood on the floor(work van) , and it rotted , and it got nasty underneath from not being able to vent the water very well.I sold that van before it could get condemmed I won't make that mistake again.

I have been tempted to pull the carpet in mine, relocate the various wiring harnesses, roll on bedliner, then put the carpet back down. That way I've got protection under the carpet. Might be more work than necessary, and for now I need to concentrate on getting my head put back on (trooper's).

Old thread, I know. Bump.

I considered this for the wife's van since the kids totally destroyed the carpet. $114 for black, $125 for grey (passenger area).

I pulled the carpet out of my Amigo when I first bought it used - apparently a rat lived under it at some point (there was still a nest) and the guys dog kept trying to dig through the carpet! Anyways, it smelled and looked horrible, so I took it and the white padding out. I didn't notice any noise increase, but it was new to me, so maybe I just didn't have time to get used to the carpeted version. Also, mine has rear air ducts, so it covers the wiring harnesses that are not in the door jams. Personally, I love the no carpet thing and just got a set of the "All weather" rubber catch all mats from Walmart and a matching cargo mat and it looks pretty good. I've even gotten several compliments on the "no carpet" look. Eventually, I might want to line-x it, but I have many other things I want to do before I drop $1k on rubber liners! The heat can be a little warm sometimes, but for the most part it is withstandable - just don't hop in the backseat barefoot!

One question I have, though, is has anyone opened the drainholes in the floor under the seats? I'd love to find a good plug and knock the tab out of those drains since that everytime I wash it I get water leaks and have no carpet to soak it up!

I popped mine out a while ago, and haven't had any problems. I just keep them out and put a mat over the holes.

My carpet lasted nicely when the Amigo never left the shop. Now, with work projects and VIP tours (why does it always rain on VIP tours?!?!), it is getting pretty nasty. Add in fistfulls of Turbo shedding and cementiate it with Newfy drool, and I need a different solution. Kammy's already counted out trading in this dog for one that drools less (I miss Gozar!), so I had to search around...

This looks like a great setup - 1/8" thick molded vinyl: http://www.auto-interior.com/moldedvinyl.htm
Here's about what it looks like (representative sample): [Linked Image]
... they have them for a bunch of Isuzu vehicles: Amigo, I-Mark, Isuzu Pickup, Trooper II

This is another option... anybody tried it?
