There is no noise to speak of, just a vibration. Just your average, garden variety vibration. Any way to confirm ring/pinion without removal? The diff fluid looked a bit old, but otherwise fine and there was nothing but a little very fine metal dust on the magnetic plug when I changed the fluid a last month.
