looking at locker, notice that detroit has a "EZ locker". WTF is that. it's sure cheap! $250 or somin. how does it differe/compare to the full blown detroit?

The EZ locker is a lunchbox style locker, similar to the Lock-rite or the Aussie. It just replaces the spider gears inside the carrier, while a full detroit replaces the whole carrier. I just put in my "Quick-Lok". Its basically an EZ locker sold at 4wheelparts.

how well does it work? b/c i'm debating just getting one.. How does it perform onroad and offroad? what about offroad performance compared to a full blown detroit?

On-road you'll get more clicking and popping with a lunch-box type locker, since they lack all the "soft locking" bits that a Detroit has. Off-road, the Detroit is stronger since it is a full case locker, while the lunch box lockers rely on the stock carrier (thus the cost savings). In a front axle, the lunch box lockers may work better since they tend to unlock easier and so make turning easier than a Detroit. More info: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/TrueTrac.shtml#Locker(it talks about the LockRite, but essentially the same thing).

b/c i have a full blown detroit in my D44 upfront. and I thought that the lunchbox locker would be better onroad for the rear..and it's cheaper. so i guess for road manners the detroit locker is better.. huh.

Does anyone have any knowledge of failures with the lunchbox type lockers with the stock carriers. I'm looking at a pair of them for my 84 (or one and a spool). I would think something else would fail first, but I have no real group trail experience. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />

The "Aussie locker" and the Powertrax "no spin" are claimed to be much smoother in opertaion than the lock rite,EZ locker or Quick lock. The aussie locker is a real bargan too

So besides price and some strength, what are the other pro's and con's of a lunch box style locker. What kind of wheeling are they good for?....I'm assuming rock crawling isn't recomended, due to the lack of strength in the carrier.
