Where is the cheapest place anyone has found a Surco or Con ferr roof rack for a first gen Rodeo? I'm looking at buying one and Im exploring the options. Also, if anyone is close to East TN and is a skilled fabricator who can make one, I'm all for that too. Of course, you'd get compensated for your time.

I would like some info on your rack. How much, how long does it take to make, do you light mounts, what's the size of the one in your pics, what is the weight capacity? Jim

How much? Well lets say I bought all the materials (I had almost everthing except the lights, stock material, and paint) I would estimate the cost around $175 just for materials.
Sadly it was during I time where I was busier than usual so the rack took 2 weeks to complete. For the light mounts I just had some tabs of steel with pre drilled holes laying around. They just happened to be the perfect size for those 5" Pro Comps. Man now that you ask me... Without going out and measuring I think it is 5'6" Long x 4' Wide x 6" Tall. I can get you an exact measurement if you need.
Well those Yakima or Thule baskets you can buy are rated at 200LBs, but are considerably lighter. Mine weighs a whopping 80LBs! So far I have load tested it about 340LBs (260LBs in rack+80LBs of the rack) and the gutters or mounts did not bend a bit.

Unfortunately I'm not out east But I am central. If you have any welding skills at all it's easy to build a rack. Even if you don't have any skills, you can buy a cheap welder, a bottle, and all the materials to build it with for less than some of the custom racks I see on ebay and such. I aready had the tools but the cost of material was around $100. thats including the Thule lockable mounts that I bought off ebay for $40. I have made some changes to it since its conception. Originally I mounted a ferring on front for less wind resistance and put 2 6"KC's up there too. Well I found out quick that people that put lights up front unprotected either never go wheeling, or they constanty have to readjust them. Anyway Off came the rack and the lights. Then it was back to the welder. Now the light mounts are protected from limbs and such. I also fabbed up a high lift mount and a shovel mount. As far as weight goes I have hauled 300 6" cedar pickets on, half of a Jeep, and every thing else that won't fit in the back. Storage dimensions are roughly 6'x 4'. Go to page two for some pics of the rack. I will get some new ones of the finished product up ASAP. CJ http://members.cardomain.com/89mudslinger

Well Jim,it depends on what you like I guess . No really what I ment was a bottle of sheilding gas for the welder. I use 75/25 mix for welding mild steel. I'm building some rock sliders tonight for the trip I am making this weekend. I'll get some pics up on my site soon. Just came in to take a break and see who all was on the wire. CJ
