max inclination before rollover #561069 01/31/05 08:42 PM

Hi all,
I have a 2002 Rodeo Isuzu 4x4.
How can I know how much inclination can it take before rolling over?
I've found myslef in a couple of situation where rollover was a very lilely outcome. It never happened, but since then I've been thinking about instaling one of those inclination gauges. The problem is thta I don't what's the limit.
Anybody knows?

Thanks.

This would be an easy question, except for the fact that the majority of the people that do roll thier trucks are highly modified and much taller. As for you it would be harder since you are not lifted.

kevan

ive seen that the new trucks from isuzu that havent been sent over yet can have a 45* angle before it rolls

Yes mine is pretty much stock, except for slightly taller BFGoodrich All Terrain tires. I would say this resulted in a 0.5". Close to insignificant.

Can I therefore assume 40degree as a good conservative limit?

As you can see in my MT/R Snow Traction thread, at one point I had my 3ö + 3ö lifted 1997 Rodeo sitting at about 45* of side angleà

At the time, I was almost sure that it was gonna roll over, but it didnÆt. --- Instead, I ended-up driving the rest of the way down that hill, and somehow managed to stay on all fours.

It wasnÆt the first time that IÆd ever been leaning so far to one side, but it WAS the first time that IÆd ever done so without meaning toà not to mention that it was also the first time I had ever done it in snow.

Without a significant lift, I believe that itÆs reasonable to assume you can safely get yours to lean-over at least as much as mine was in those photos, if not a little more so.

^^^ But donÆt hold me to that!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

the answer to this question varies from vehicle to vehicle as well as terrain and circumstances. I would say its impossible to give a definitive answer.

as such, my opinion in inclinometers is that they're neat and fun but basically worthless. i've seen many of those ones with the jeep picture you buy from Summit, and almost always, those will max out before you're even close to a dangerous level.

justs just say, if pushing the limits, you'll probably have already maxed the inclinometer... not that you'd know, because you're likely to be so gripped, looking at it will be the last thing on your mind.

But using friends as inclinometers? Sooooo much fun!!! Have a couple outside as a point of reference, then get someone in the passenger seat that might crush you if they fall. Brings it all to a whole new level. (no pun intended)

For what it's worth, no part of the side of my truck ever touched the rock.

We can't go by Smiley's 45 degree incident. He's such a saint that his angels were holding him up! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> I mostly trust ass-pucker as the best gauge <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> of an impending rollover. The closest I came to dumping it was when I was staging an articulation photo shot <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> That would have been hard to explain to my wife <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

With my 99 lifted Amigo, I have maxed out my two gauges (left - right) & (front - back) 45*+. The highest compound angle was a 35-40* left tilt with a 30-35* forward tilt. Back right tire was >6' in the air. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
I will see if I can find the picture of IIRC Dallas standing under it. Happened at Crawloween 01 or 02 on Golden Spike. Same trail that Joe D's brakes decided to let go.

Anyway, interestingly enough, with the swaybars removed (I snapped both in half), a busted driver rear upper shock mount, and my aggressive driving style... I FREQUENTLY exceed 30-35* right - left tilt (cornering), 35-40* forward tilt (braking), & 30-35* rear tilt (accelerating) ON ROAD.
TOP THAT!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I love scaring the hell out of approaching traffic coming around the bend to the left as I am flying around the right hand corner (~60*) leaning >35* @ 50MPH+ and hitting the dip causing the passenger rear tire to leave pavement...
PRICELESS!!!

If only I had that dash mounted cam, and/or a cam mounted observing the corner... THAT would be cool. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
