Anyone have an idea how much a front brake job on an '89 4x4 PU should cost at a good repair shop? This would include pads and rotors but not calipers. Thanks.

Jimso please trust me and do the work yourself. Not only will you save a lot of money but you will learn as well. Disk brakes are simple to work on and wont be a problem what so ever. Im very much a novice to mechanical work and my buddy and I handled the job in no time. For half the cost of labor alone you can get a set of rebuilt calipers from pepboys which come fully loaded with new pads and what not. I think they are like 88 bucks a piece. Plus you get your core charge back. Just slap em on and go.

You can do it yourself. You can find pads for $20 and rotors for $60.

Plus if you do it yourself, you KNOW that it's done right. It seems many of the shops these days have a lot of callback problems and much less care taken to someone's car. They just bang the job out and don't pay as much attention as they should. Brake shops in my opinion are the biggest rip. You will get in there and they will quote you $150 and then they will call you 6 hours later to tell you that you need new brake lines and a booster and blah blah blah.... when you really only needed a bleed. Most people just listen to them and do it for $500. It is very easy and there is plenty of info and help here to take care of your front brakes. You could do this in an hour your first time. Go get some pads for like $30 bucks and some brembo OEM replacement rotors for like $60 apiece and your in. Don't be afraid to ask people here for help if you need it.

I'd doubt that any shop other than the dealer would know the proper method to retorque the axle nut bolts (torque inner nut, spin rotor back and forth, loosen inner nut and torque to final spec). To remove the rotor, you have to pull off the cone washers and hub, so they might charge you extra vs. a 2wd vehicle. Dealer charges $350 to repack the bearings, and just pulling the rotor off is most of that work. I'd guess $250-300 labor alone plus parts ($100 per rotor, $50 for pads).

Good quality pads: about $20-25
Turn rotors: seems I paid $10, or was that $10 each? Either way, no more than $20.

Shouldn't need to touch the calipers. Might need to bleed the brakes which is always a good thing to do anyway. So what, $5 for a bottle of fluid.

Front brakes are an easy hour in the garage. Schit, it will take you longer to jack up the truck. Ok, maybe not.

Seems like the simplest things take me the longest to get done. Hell swapping motors is one helluvalot easier and quicker for me than trying to swap out rear leaf packs! And we are talking stock to stock....
