Ok im gonna try and explaine this as best as possible

I bought a 89 XJ for dirt cheap a couple weeks ago but came with a confussing problem...they guy i got it from said all he did was replace the steering pump..
And now for no reason i can think of will not make a full left turn..it stops at about a 1/4 turn full cock and makes for an interesting yet pain in the ass to drive.

it goes all the way to the right though

and when i have the wheels pointing straight the steering wheel is not centered its a half turn over

i know its not the alignment as someone said i know thats not the issue
my question is could it be the gear box, pitman arm?? doesn't look as if the pitman arm has been touched....... just cant figure it out and they wont inspect it becaue of this..
I have posted this all over and get some dumbs answers so ill here too! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Body Damage is Cool
Was there a lift kit put on? Does it turn too far to the right? The Pitman arm may be off, I'd actually guess this first, but if all he did was replace the steering pump, there may be other issues as well.

When I put a lift kit on mine, I learned really quick that I had to get the drop pitman arm to compensate for the difference in the suspension. Even after I did this, I had to get an alignment done to get everything lined up right.

Just some thoughts....

most likely he reconnected the steering column in the wrong orientation. the steering wheel and the pitman arm both have to be centered when it is put back together.

Disconnect drag link from the pitman arm. Unbolt steering column connection to steer box. Center steering wheel in cab. Center pitman arm (should be pointing directly forward). Bolt column back to steer box. Reconnect drag link to pitman arm. Adjust drag link length to center steering wheel in cab again.

Make sure it's not just hitting on a bolt or binding somewhere before you go through all this effort.
