If you have any tricks for not making a mess when changing the oil filter on the v6 please let me know! I thought I had the secret today.. I sharpened a brass pipe, connected it to my pnumatic oil extractor and tried to jab it into the oil filter to suck out all the oil before I unscrewed it. Looked great on paper!! Unfortunately.... the Toyota filters are tuff and the rod wouldn't go through it. I ended up jabbing it with a screw driver and then sticking the oil extractor tube into that hole and it made 95% less mess than a normal filter swap, but I still had oil to clean up.... so what's the secret to do it with no mess???

On the plus side, I learned that the oil extractor works awesome! I sucked the oil out the dip stick hole, then pulled the drain plug to see how much was still in there. Not one single drop came out!! Here's the oil extractor, it works slick:

i just end up moving the bucket around trying to catch it all but still makes a hell of a mess

How about make a small hole on the filter and use compresssor air to force all the oil toward the engine block, I will try that on the next oil change.

I have the same problem with the filter mess when I change oil in my 4 banger. The suction method of changing oil is a great way to do it. I use the Pela suction pump I noticed that I got more out than when I changed oil from below. When I changed oil in my wife's VW diesel, I can use the Pela to suck the oil out of the filter canister which opens from the top next to the engine. I wish more vehicles had this design. It is like the early 1950s chevy pickups

i took my truck there to have a full fluid change done and they <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />ED it up bad
i knew i should have done it myself <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
they over filled the motor oil <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

under fill the tranny and spilled around a quart down the engine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

they didn't remove the 2 skid plates to refill the front diff so they tried the fill it back up using the drain hole <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

they almost rounded the rear diff fill plug, the only reason they didn't round it off is because i told them to stop and don't even try to take it off

they have a bunch of <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />holes working there that do not care so i am never taking my truck anyplace to have my fluids changed again

I found that if you buy a 2005 Tacoma with the 4.0, it's alot easier to change the oil and filter.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
