Body Damage is Cool
Ya, and they also said it will be more "civilized" than the origional.

BTW, the stock tire size (according to toyota.com) is a 265/70/17. Not a 33" tire. It barely makes for a 32" (it's 31.5" tall)
There are some specs of it on toyota.com, but it doesn't go into detail as to frame, gears, etc. that we're all interested in.

I saw the Gladiator at the Detroit auto show last month and it is truly amazing! The thing is all beef, no fluff (side-mounted spare notwithstanding). Fully boxed frame, diesel, solid axles, decent bed that is line-x'd or something, good cab space. But it is large - on par with a full-size standard cab truck.

Still, I'd buy one.

I would too. Actually, the side mount spare makes a lot of functional sense. Its the old-school way to mount one.

Here are the stats that were anounced:

It will share the chassis with the 4Runner, but will be 11" shorter overall and have a 4" shorter wheelbase.

4.0 V6
6 speed manual or 5 speed auto
Optional locking rear diff

That's about all I could gather, other than it will be a "surprising value" and Toyota expects to produce about 40k annually.

It looks kinda fat and squat to me. I would probably consider buying it though. It seems more expedition style oriented rather than hardcore off road styled.

Looks like a rebodied 4Runner. All the same specs (4.0L V6, electric gew-gaws). It does have brushed headlight and interior trim.

Whatever.

Yup - 4Runner w/ an f-d up body. Not even a convertable. Blind spot big enough to kill a 400# Harley Rider.

Putting an FJ Bezel on the love child of a 4Runner and Element does NOT make this worthy of the FJ name plate...

I'm taking the Ben Franklin approach. It will seriously disappoint. It will be a Scion-niche approach for Xterra buyers.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a thread winner! It's a horrible bastardization of the FJ namesake...

I hate it when you guys are right. I think that Rubicon and Power Wagon owners can sleep easy tonight.

And from the looks of things, they'll be sleeping soundly for years to come...

You guys are more curmudgeonly than *I* am! (and that is saying somethin...) Having taken the Ben Franklin pessimist approach, I am slightly impressed. A shorter 4Runner, 4.0, elocker is not a bad starting point at all. That blind spot should disappear after a lawsuit or two. Squat? Yeah, but that means wider by a little (not the new Taco wider), did I detect 33s stock? We'll see how surprising the value proposition is. Back to ol' Ben for that one.
