I spent most of yesterday going to about 9 autoparts stores. The counter jockies are of little help. But here is what I've learned.
You can no longer buy a caliper re-build kit for a 2.6 liter Gen One. Well at least their computers will bring up the wrong part number and kit. I tried every year, sport versions, everything I could throw at them.
I went to several AutoZone, Napa, Checker stores totalling about nine altogether. Every one tried to sell me a kit that was way too big for the caliper that I held in my hand. I figured they had the V-6 kit, but the computer continually came up wrong.
The counter guys were dumb and dumber. The typical answer was, "The computer isn't wrong, you have the wrong caliper". And I had just removed it off the 87 SWB of Yamas' that was in my driveway!
In the end the manager of the last store, an Auto Zone took the numbers off the caliper and looked up to see where else it was used.
To my surprise he tells me the caliper is also used on the 87 Mitsubishi Mirage.
He runs out back and comes back with a re-build kit that fits the Montero caliper.
So, if you are interested, the part number for the caliper kit is 66628. It is manufacured by Brake HeadQuarters for AutoZone. Cost was $10.99, but I am sure you could find it cheaper. I found prices ranged from $2.99 to $10.00 for the "wrong kit".
Just thought I would pass this little tid-bit along.
Happy breaking! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
