I spent most of yesterday going to about 9 autoparts stores. The counter jockies are of little help. But here is what I've learned.

You can no longer buy a caliper re-build kit for a 2.6 liter Gen One. Well at least their computers will bring up the wrong part number and kit. I tried every year, sport versions, everything I could throw at them.

I went to several AutoZone, Napa, Checker stores totalling about nine altogether. Every one tried to sell me a kit that was way too big for the caliper that I held in my hand. I figured they had the V-6 kit, but the computer continually came up wrong.

The counter guys were dumb and dumber. The typical answer was, "The computer isn't wrong, you have the wrong caliper". And I had just removed it off the 87 SWB of Yamas' that was in my driveway!

In the end the manager of the last store, an Auto Zone took the numbers off the caliper and looked up to see where else it was used.

To my surprise he tells me the caliper is also used on the 87 Mitsubishi Mirage.

He runs out back and comes back with a re-build kit that fits the Montero caliper.

So, if you are interested, the part number for the caliper kit is 66628. It is manufacured by Brake HeadQuarters for AutoZone. Cost was $10.99, but I am sure you could find it cheaper. I found prices ranged from $2.99 to $10.00 for the "wrong kit".

Just thought I would pass this little tid-bit along.

Happy breaking!

Good to know. Be sure to add this info to the Part Number Repository.

The 87 and older calipers are differant than the 88 and newer calipers. The 87 use a v groove kind of slide and the 88 use a pin type slider.

The 88 and 89 calipers are all the same v6 or 4 cyl. The 88 and newer calipers do use larger pistons.are larger in diameter.

web page

There are pics of both styles on the brake convesrion page.

Really? This is the first I've heard this. So does this mean there is no point in doing a V6 brake upgrade on my '88 because the components are the same? Or is it that only the calipers are the same?

I have everything to do the upgrade (came with the full '91 front end I picked up to do the front diff swap) except the master cylinder.

EDIT: Ah, I see. It helps if I actually read the link Kevin provided.

Believe me, I tried 84, 85, 86, and 87 to get a different kit than the big one. None of the part's stores came up with a small piston kit. Not one. Every computer spit out the same info and part numbers. All were large diameter kits for a much larger piston.

Well I guess you don't have to believe me, just wait till it's your turn at the auto part's store.

It might be a regional thing. As someone who's been in more than one region shopping for car parts, I can tell you that the NAPA in Naperville, IL will give me much different (better) results than the NAPA/shack in Leesville, LA.
Also keep in mind that, nowadays, talking to the guy across the parts counter is like talking to a turtle.

No, I don't doubt that '87 calipers are hard to find. I was commenting on Kevin's specification that the '88 and the '87 were different and that the '88 used the same parts as newer models. I'm wondering if that means that doing the V6 brake upgrade isn't applicable for an '88 because an '88 might already have the same parts as the Gen I V6.

Sorry about the confusion.

The info is posted on the brakes web page, there is a link to it in my post.

The V6 has larger rotors.

To put V6 brakes on your you need splash shields, rotors and caliper brackets off of a V6.

Yes, sorry about that. I was reading that page about the same time of your response. Thanx Kevin.

Wow, what an awsome mod. Kevin C's upgrade should be posted permanentlly, under the tech features in the 4x4 Wire Mitsubishi Section.
