Found this online, so may not be correct (the years)

2001-2004
Front: Large Speaker: 5.25". Tweeters (EX Models): 2.50"
Rear: 6.50"

1995-2000
Front: 4" (I know EX models had a tweeter option in at '98, possibly before...)
Rear: 6.5"

You don't have to be blingin' it out to have a bangin' stereo. Everybody likes the muzac. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" />

blah... there's nothing Blingy about upgrading your sound system. The factory speakers suck. Any Wal-fart replacement would be better.

... thinking while I'm typing, I shouldn't say they suck. The main problem with the factory speakers is that they don't provide a full range of sound. They've got plenty of highs but they lack on the low end severely. I'm not talking about Thumping bass or anything... I'm just talking about depth to the sound. Without the low end, the factory speakers sound ,for lack of better terminology, tinny.

I've got the 4" fronts on my sportage. (2000) I didn't know they put bigger speakers up fron on those newer models. That's cool. One thing to mention: (and i don't know if this is true of the newer models) The speakers in the front speaker wires are soldered in place. You'll have to either get female ends to attach back to the new speaker or solder the new connection.

That was my first duty as a loyal rock and roll music lover was to upgrade my stereo unit. One day I will replace the door speakers and the ones in the rear. I'm realy dieing to do it but I just have to many other things to do.

I will say though - once I put my Xplod with DSO in and added a modest 8" sub w 200 watt amp it made all the difference in the world. I get the mid-low and low frequencies missing from the factory setup.

The DSO Dynamic Sound Organizer can help when your speakers are of poor quality - but a cheap pair of Jensens from Walmart would make a big difference.

Replacing the radio is easy - If you need help let me know, I can probably help out.

Rock On....

Yep. The stock speakers have something to be desired... I went out and got me MB-Quart speakers (titanium tweeters, over $150/pair. Gotta love the Germans, huh?) and an Eclipse stereo (which can be tracked if stolen. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" />). I listen to mostly hard rock and heavy metal with lots of solos (Black Label Society, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Rammstein, Whitesnake - lots o' '80s rock...) so I wanted lots of high end and some tight base.

The little 4" MB-Quarts put out almost as much bass as my friends 2 8" subs. Pretty amazing lit'l speakers. (they better be for the price...)

as much bass as 2 8" subs? wow... that IS impressive. Me, I just went with an alpine head unit (to match the kia cd changer which was an alpine that had kia badging all over it) and added a kicker comp vr10 in a ported box with a 200w cadence amp. Works great for me. I like the head cause it's got the sub controls in it so for things like country music i can turn the subs way down or for hip hop i can crank it. I DO however want to upgrade the 4"ers in the front and the rears eventually.

Actually, what i want is more midrange. Any suggestions?!?

For more mids I would try one of the folowing....

The 4 inch speakers in the door are a good size for midrange, get a set of 3 way speakers for the door.

Try using the graphic eq.

My Xplod has HPF and LPF settings built into the head unit - maybe yours does also. I set my HPF @ 125hz. That way the ultra low stuff doesn't bug 'em. Likewise I set my LPF settings on the head unit to 125hz so I get a good match. Just incase the head unit doesn't match the amp, I put my amps LPF/HPF settings to flat and just let the head unit do the work. Now I just need new door and rear deck speakers.

Try some horns in the rear....

My Xplod is a cdx-M630 - it has an invisible full matrix dual face, you can open it to show the face with buttons ( just incase the batteries in the remote die ), it has XM built in, seperate sub controls etc.... picked it up at Car Toys. DSO and EQ7....

I really get into Car Stereos I guess because I commute every day so I spend Quality time in my truck. One day I'll do a really nice system, they keep getting better as I get older... maybe cause I need them louder to make up for the ears going out.

My subwoofer is an 8" tube driven by a DOT "0" 200 watt amp. It makes the mirrors shake and that enough for me now. Its not the best setup on earth - I built my own double box ported with 2 10's. That was for trunk of my Grand Prix. It was MDF, driven by 600watts and would rattle the house windows, set car alarms off and crap like that. Not practical though as it filled the entire trunk.

Are you "into it"? What do you have / had?

Later man

Mark

If mids are what you want I'd say go for Sony Xplodes - VERY much a mid-range speaker.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know how much money you are wanting to spend so some of what I say might be off base. I am mostly speaking here with the assumption that you are trying to get a bargain or the best bang for your buck at a low price, not something super expensive.

I hate Sony car audio... except for their older stuff. The Sony Mobile ES line was nice. Any current Sony offerings are quite junky.

If you want good speakers at a pretty low price I would stay away from the stores. You will find high prices and low quality at any big store, unless you go to an actual car audio store, one that specializes in car audio. Even then it is possible you might find only crap. All these places like Circuit City and Best Buy and such only have consumer-grade junky speakers and decks.

I would reccommend getting some speakers online. You are going to be somewhat limited by the 4" size of the front speakers. You gotta get a good brand. None of this sony or pioneer or kenwood or any of that. These are pretty good, this is probably what I would get in your situation:

http://www.thezeb.com/p-CDT-Audio-CL-4X-4-inch-Full-Range-Speakers-101077.htm

Another one that sounds good (I have used them so I know) are these:

http://www.speakersound.com/index.html?loadfile=iteme89440.html

But the first ones I suggested are better bang for the buck I think. You should snap that deal up smile

Also, if you are not satisfied with the sound in your car, consider this: Just replacing speakers isn't going to completely alter how your system sounds. You need a way to tune the sound. If you aren't trying to spend a lot of money, I would definitely get a deck that has an equalizer built into it. That way you will have more control over the tone. Simple bass and treble controls are not enough. They do not allow enough adjustment of the sound.

I would consider getting yourself a 4 channel amplifier to hook your speakers up to, then a separate amp for your subwoofer, if you are going to install a sub, that is. Then you need a decent deck that has 3 sets of preamp outs: Front, rear, and subwoofer. If you want to get a little higher end, you would get a deck that has 3-way mode and you would use the preamp outputs for tweeter, mid, and sub. This way you would have the tweeters on 2 of the amp's channels, and the mids on 2 of the channels, and you would use the active crossover in the deck. This is a good way to set things up as it allows a LOT of tuneability.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself here though... You probably just want to hook your cd player directly to your speakers, right? Also you may not want separate mids and tweeters, you probably just want speakers to go right in the door and replace what you have. Fine, that's OK, not great but I still have some suggestions.

For starters, if you are going to do this very simple type of system, it is important what deck (cd player) you get. This is because you are going to be using the amp that is inside the deck to drive the speakers (like the stock system does) and most decks have CRAPPY CRAP CRAP CRAP amplifiers in them that are very weak. Most decks (cough, SONY, cough) lie about how much power they put out. DO NOT BUY A SONY DECK if you are going to hook your speakers directly to it.

A good choice would be an Alpine 9813 used off Ebay, or a 9833 (the newer version that is in stores now I think). These 2 models both have the Alpine V-Power internal amp which is more powerful than other decks (true clean power, unlike Sony decks that lie).

Another good choice would be one of the Panasonic decks. Yes I said PANASONIC. These are GOOD decks and a well-kept secret in car audio. They aren't the most popular or flashy but they are built with quality electronics and they have good sound quality. They also put out GOOD power, more clean power than a lot of other decks (except maybe Alpine). HOWEVER, I am only talking about certain Panasonic decks, the ones that say Mosfet Power.

Anyways, I would REALLY reccommend Alpine if at all possible. BUT do not buy the Alpine decks from Best Buy. They are a lower-grade crappy line. If you're gonna get an Alpine deck get a 9813 off Ebay or a 9815 or a 9833 or 9835. Just my 2 cents.
