Now THAT is a scary thought!

Let's see...70 US gallons = 265 liters, X 89.9c/L(local price) = $238.24CAN.

No offence Jerry, but I'm glad it's you and not me!

OH YEA IT WOULD BREAK UP A RICH MAN, BUT WHEN I PUT THE ENG IN 1971 I WAS BUYING GAS FOR 23 CENTS A GALLON , U KNOW AND WHO CARED , ODDLY ENOUGH I CAN RUN UNLOADED AT 70 MPH AND GET 10 MPG OR I CAN PULL MY TRAILER WITH MY 4WHEEL DR, MASSEY FERGUSEN ON IT AT ABOUT 9 000 LBS AND IT DOESN,T MAKE A WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERANCE ,WILL MAINTAIN SPEED UP A PRETTY LONG AND STEEP GRADE WITH NO PROB. DROPS TO ABOUT 8MPG WOULD LOVE TO SWAP IN THE NEW 4HK1 TURBO MOTOR FROM A NEW STYLE NPR TRUCK JERRY

Thank you Jerry and NCDiesel for your replies about the Trooper diesel fuel tank size. Jeez, here I'm thinking the 19.1 gallon fuel tank in my 1982 Chevy LUV is large and now I will have another diesel with an even larger tank. A 21.9 gallon fuel tank will only help me for my project 86 Trooper diesel. Just recently on Saturday (2/26/05) I bought an 81 Isuzu PUP 4x4 diesel with 98,000 original miles. The frame and body are shot, but the engine/trans package is hardly broken in. Bought it out of a local junkyard, so you can expect something to be wrong with it or otherwise it wouldn't be in the yard. I will be dropping in the engine out of the 81 PUP into my 1986 Trooper turbo diesel with no engine/trans. Even though the 4-speed 4WD transmission has low miles, I would actually like to buy the overdrive 5-speed 4WD transmission used in the Trooper turbo diesels to reach a higher speed when I need to. I know I remember Jerry said that these 4-speed 4WD tranmissions used in the diesels were bulletproof. From my experience with my 1982 Chevy LUV diesel and its 5-speed transmission I would have to say that it isn't bulletproof. Jerry, would you say the 5-speed 4WD transmission used in the Trooper turbo diesel was bulletproof or more similar to the 5-speed 2WD transmission. Since I will be putting in a non-turbo diesel engine into the Trooper, I would think the overdrive 5th gear would be a savior gear in a sense. I can't wait to start the project and will start a new thread for the conversion/project with pictures when I get it started.

those 5 spds in the troopers had about the same problem with the 5 th gears as the pickups did , however i have seen many of them go 150-200 thousand miles if they are serviced regular, another problem with the 5spd in the dsl was most people would drive around in 5th gear at around 45-50 mph around town driving and it was just too much load on those small 5th gears , as 5th gear is a remote gear in the trans and in the 4spd 4th gear is a direct gear , being that you have The front and rear diff from the 81 which are 4.11 just put these in the trooper, just swap the frt and rear diffs and use the 4psd with the 15 inch tires from the trooper and you should be good to go ,finding a good used 5spd for one of the troopers is pretty tough , as most of them have made the 150 thousand mark who knows , the 5 spd internal parts are almost identical parts to the 4 spd , it is the indirect drive of the 5th gear setup , however most all 5spd boxs are that way , the cheepest and the easiest and most durable way go with 4.11 frt and rear diff and the 4psd ,, and the bigger tires JERRY

Thanks for the info on the transmissions Jerry. I can always count on you to answer my questions about these Isuzu diesels. I think I will consider to use the 4-speed trans and 4.11 axles in my Trooper. I have located a 1986 Trooper diesel 5-speed trans that I wanted to buy to have that extra gear. But I had a gut feeling that the 4WD 5-speed was similar to the 2WD 5-speed in durability. I also wanted to keep the 4.56 front and rear axles for the extra towing power, as the axles will do much of the work anyways. The 4.56 axle is a tree stump puller! The lowest axle ratio I have ever known about in a passenger vehicle is probably 4.88. So am I really better off with the 4-speed/4.11 ratios than the 5-speed/4.56 ratios, along with the upgrade of 33x9.50x15" tires?? I only plan to use my Trooper in winter weather and on roads where the speed limit is 45-50 mph. It is a vehicle I don't tend to run on the highway, but more so in town. Jerry, I also had another question to ask you. For the 84-91 1st GEN Trooper what was the first year you could get limited slip differential in the rear? Thanks.

Need a Spot
My 86 4dr TurboD with 225Kmiles on it gets 24.5 to 26 in town and 26.5 to 27 on the highway, the ranges are winter and summer. I have attained 28 MPG only when running the dirt backroads at 2000rpm all day, or on a trip which included driving to Cooke City, MT on the switchbacks of Beartooth highway at low speeds keeping the turbo spooled up. It was so much fun putting a cloud of soot in the face of those tailgaters on that long winding road. 235 tires. Stock.

1988 was the first year , although they were available thru the parts dept , basically over he counter parts in 86, the lsd was first used if i remember correctly in the turbo impulse as it came with the 10 bolt rearend assy ,and lsd fit the pickups and the trooper, would also fit anyof the 10 bolt rear diff , Jerry

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I rebuilt my '86 Trooper TD about 5000 miles ago and have averaged 28 mpg, combinded city/highway. I never exceed 65mph and never rev above 3000rpm. I can go 550 miles and still have 2 gallons reserve, on one tank of gas. I run 225/75 15 tires. Vehicle is all stock.

When you are getting 26-28 mpg in an 86-87 Trooper turbo diesel that is doing about the best you can. The higher the miles on the engine and still getting in that range is reassuring. Steve since you only have 5,000 miles on your turbo diesel, getting 28 mpg is what a brand new Trooper got anways (according to fueleconomy.gov). It's not so much your mpg # that impresses me, but it's going 550 miles to a tank of fuel that does. That sure is great because when you think of what today's SUVs get in fuel mileage the Trooper turbo diesel is blowing most off the map .
