Hello all Im happy to join the Toyota lovers- hopefully someone can help with my prob...
I bought a 1990 SR5 Pickup 4x4 5spd V6 The truck came with 145k. The frame looks brand new which is always a good start. I noticed the cooling system had been neglected, and I had to back flush 3-4 times before I got the scale and orange muck out. So i assumed the rest of the truck was neglected...
Impressing a few friends in the light snow (foolish me) I proceeded to do a burn out that lasted till mid 2nd gear. After the smoke cleared we couldent stand the smell of BURNING CLUTCH! I figured it was the original, and needed a due replacement any how. I drove home from the incident fine- and everything was good with the (loose grabbing)clutch/tranny untill the next day.
I had to repeatedly turn the key to "off" position to get the tranny in and out of reverse and into first. I was fine driving the truck in this erratic manner and all was good in the YOTA hood...
UNTILL my dad drove the truck. He didnt know the quarks with the ill clutch/tranny issue and he proceeded to somehow jam that shift lever into reverse. And in reverse it stayed. Upon trying to get the ill trans into 1st he forced the lever out of reverse and into NEUTRAL. And neutral is where it resides (but with the tranny still in R gear)
I have the truck on jacks and have the tranny just about off- all i need to do is remove the 2nd bolt from the starter and it should slide freely- i hope. Upon visual inspection- I see gasket maker all over the tranny connections- the dude before me MUST have been toying with the tranny and or clutch.
Everything was fine and now its not.
Any suggestions on why the shift lever can be in neutral and the tranny still in reverse gear??? Before i toook the shift levers out- i played with it for about an hour trying to slide the lever back into reverse while playing with rev matching, but no luck. So whats happening? I def need a new clutch and flywheel resurface, any suggestions on a cheep alternative that withstands more abuse than the stocker? And what are some guesses with the tranny issue? Thanks so much!!!
