Getting the Wheeling Fever

How can I tell if my rear driveshaft needs to be replaced?? The mechanic told me it needed to be replaced because something inside was broke, he took a screwdriver and tapped the it and it sounded hollow inside <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. I'm thinking this is a load of bull*****! Am I wrong?

Thanks for any input you guys might have.
