I own a 93 rodeo ute with a 2.8 turbo diesel.

From the time of purchase (bout 1 month ago) my ute has perfomed lower then whats expected. It seemed to originally be lacking in power until about 2300. at this rpm you can start to hear the turbo whistling. An older model (97) seemed to have power right threw the rev range, with the same motor.

But the real problems started after I adjusted the tappets and checked a few things.

I pulled the ducting off and found oil on the turbo impella and in the ducting. I then saw a boost line that went from the inlet manifold between the turbo and motor to a diaphram at the top injecter pump. I think its some way of regulating fuel according to the turbo. I removed the top of the diaphram to inspect it, it was full of oil which has had of come from the turbo, threw the manifolds. I cleaned out the diaphram and refitted it back togeter.

I then wanted to test for a sticky waiste gate. So I used an air compresser with airblower to open and close the waiste gate from the diaphram. It seemed to work ok.

After the tappets, injector pump diaphram and the waiste gate Ive now got no power above 1500 revs. It revs to 1500, then blows a lotta smoke, sits at 1500 (on full throttle) for about 10secs then slowely increases to max rpm blowing a heck load of smoke..

any ideas?
