hmm.. and one more thing ... how do u think i would do in sand with that big of tires.. and stock gears.. this lake here has lots of sand and some big hills.. i almost think i would be at a loss of power enough so i wouldnt even make it up lol.. or am i wrong?

No issue. I ran 33's & 4.10s for quite a while before I went to 4.56. & never had a gripe about wheeling. I think the only thing that would neccessitate lower gears would be rock crawling (not my thing). Sand & mud were never a problem for me in 4lo, 1st and I was usually looking to get into 2nd or 3rd gear. Air down your tires & keep your wheel speed & RPM's up, no issues.

K thanks Roger, but I have one more question

You can always shift to a lower gear. Since 4th and 5th gears are about that same ratio apart, if you drive in 4th with 33s, it would be the same as 5th gear w/ 28s. As long as you have a lower gear to use when needed, you can compensate for the tire size.

So sense I have an automatic I am kind of screwed for the dropping into 4th gear instead of 5th right? Or did I read it wrong?

Thanks Ian

Auto is a4-speed gear box, O/D is the 4th gear. Likely you just won't ever use or even get the tranny to shift into O/D.

I have an 87' auto and a 3" BL and it has enough power. I have the 22rte but the turbo doesn't really do much on mine. I think itd be ok. Mine works great in the mud.

Just throwing this out... were assuming 4.10 gearing...
Your an AUTO you may have 4.30 tucked in the axles... this would help somewhat to begin....

I grabbed a parts truck 87 Auto EFI had 4.30's

I'll post the codes in a sec.....

These may help....

This Link as well
its in the above link.

I have used both the "code" and the spin method... spin was helpful, found out PO had changed rear diff and not the front <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

With the automatic you should probably have the 4.30 gears so going to 32 or 33" tires shouldn't hurt too much. I think it hurts the 5 speed more because they usually have 4.10 gears. I've run 3 different 86-88 4Runners with the automatic and 32" tires and never had any problems. On my 86 I ended up getting the Downey header and it helped make up for the perceived power loss.

Body Damage is Cool
I have 35's with 4:30 gears (the donor truck was an auto) and it's KILLIN' me. MPG is WAY down, and driving around central Texas and the hill county is misery. I'm having Zuk drop in 5:29's as soon as I get the $$ together.....
