Lift/Tire question #568566 02/15/05 02:03 AM

I was talkin to someone who use to own a first generation 4Runner... and he said that he had stock gears... and just a 2-3 in body lift and 33's... and he said that it was fine... so I was wondering how slow would it actually be? around in mph... would it be almost unbearable? Would it even get enough speed to go through any mud... and what is the stock gears for an '86 4Runner?

Thanks ian

the stock gears should be 4.10. I have 33s with my stock gears and do just fine. I drive on the freeway everyday and do better than I did with 31s because the bigger tire brings 3rd gear into range alot more. I noticed the power loss when I got the 33s but after a quick tune up all power was regained.
oh and it has plenty of power to go through the mud high or low range

i had stock gearing (4.10) with 35's and it was bearable. Definitly regear if you can, it will save your clutch big time. you pretty much lose 5th gear on the highway, and your gas mileage tends to go down the sh*tter. for the most part you will still have enough power for wheelin' in 4low.

i was flat out at 65mph with 35's and stock gearing, and got 12-15mpg. that is with a 5speed, automatic will suck up a little more.

Is that compensating for the speedo being off?

My cuz's 3.05spd with 38's and stock gears does about 60mph max, about 70-75 with 529's. (compensating for speedo differences).

-yah 65mph is an approx number. i can push the needle on my speedo to just under 55mph on flat ground.

You do not lose any power with larger tires, at least in the sense that the engine is what supplies the power and unless you make changes to it, it'll put out the same power regardless of the tire size. You may lose some effective power in that the larger tires are harder to turn (heavier and have more rolling resistance), you'll have a larger frontal area to push through the wind and if the engine has to turn at a slower RPM for a given speed, it may be operating at a less than ideal point in the torque curve.

What you do lose with larger tires is effective gearing. Going from 28->33" tires is a change of about 17% in the effective gear ratio. This means you engine has to work 17% harder in a given gear with the taller tires. You can always shift to a lower gear. Since 4th and 5th gears are about that same ratio apart, if you drive in 4th with 33s, it would be the same as 5th gear w/ 28s. As long as you have a lower gear to use when needed, you can compensate for the tire size. And you have low range in the t-case for off-road use. Sand and mud generally uses high wheel speeds than you would use in rocks, so may not be a big drawback. If you find it is a dog, then re-gear.
