I'd be VERY interested in buying a set of 4.88 R&P gears. In the near future I am another one who plans on getting 33" tires for my Trooper. I am a little hesitant of retaining the original gearing when I do this, but, also wondering if the 5.38s will make it tough on the interstate. If the 4.88s where available, I'd be saving my quarters for them now! And, yes, no more worries about obtaining the unobtainable, and mythical 4.77s.

hmm... well, i can say officially that I would not be interested in 'em.

but then, my 91 V6 trooper rolled out of the factory with 4.77's

the 4.88 is the best part of this idea, I've gotta admit... 4.88 is closer to "in the middle" between 4.56 and 5.38, and also the obvious match to other axles is king.

But the other side of the coin is if I had my 'druthers i'd put the $800+ an installed set would cost* and use it to bring my engine some power at a quiet 2500rpm rather than trying to bring my highway RPM's up to the 3300+rpm power range.

in effect, I'd rather have a 3.4L turning 35" tires on 4.56 gears, than a 2.8L turning 35" tires on 4.88's or 5.38's. however I wouldn't want a big block turning 35's on 3.73 gears.

gotta work both sides of the equation smile

They sound good , but can you still get a limited slip locker in those ratios? I have the G80 in both my troopers but they have the 4:56 gearing. But then I am also only running 245/75/15 on one and 31's on the other.I would like to see 32 or possibly 33 in the future.

just to throw something else out there... it would be nice to see someone source together an install kit for the 10 & 12-bolt axles.

i now stock 10 and 12 bolt pinion seals and crush collars

i have the part numbers for most of the bearings...crossover #'s...not Isuzu.

this is something i have worked on, but yet to finish. real issue is cost. the parts add up quick and if guys are expecting to grab an $85 master install kit w/ their gears.....well.........that will be tough.

i have not given up on it. I do actually have an install kit for rear 10 bolts....Believe it or not....but it is not an exact cross over for the front.

sounds to me like you have no concept of how a differential is put together.

we're talking about swapping the ring and pinion out for a different ratio. It bolts to whatever carrier you have.....Open , Limited slip, Arb, etc.

non-issue

Unless you are one of the unlucky ones with late model Trooper that has modified 12 bolt, then those gears are not for you. Ops, I forgot I'm one of them!

Please pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does `third member' actually refer to?

Instead of having a removable differential cover, with the carrier bolted in-place inside, like a Dana (or many others) - a third member axle has NO COVERà the carrier, gear set, and output (tail?) shaft are all integrated onto a single removable unit, like this:

good idea, 4.88 matches up to dana and toyota stuff, and can cover 32-36" tires depending on your preference.

anyone know how many teeth are on the pinion w/ 4.88's? My 5.38's have 8, but if the 4.88's have more, I'd probably use them for the extra beef.
