Please pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does `third member' actually refer to?

Instead of having a removable differential cover, with the carrier bolted in-place inside, like a Dana (or many others) - a third member axle has NO COVERà the carrier, gear set, and output (tail?) shaft are all integrated onto a single removable unit, like this:
