so i soaked my u-joints in penetrating oil overnight and they still would not budge. (86 4runner)
i took the whole mess to east county driveshaft here in san diego and the shop owner said they almost always have to cut the toy u-joints out with a torch! very hard to get out otherwise. Also mentioned that the best replacement is factory- not aftermarket. just $.02 from a proffessional- take it for what its worth...
anyway hes going to cut mine out for $10 each. not bad I think.

I've changed a LOT of Toyota u-joints and have never had to "cut" one out.

Are you sure you got all the clips out? Are you using this method?

Much easier than trying to pound them out with a socket. I can change one in 10 minutes using this method. The hardest part is getting the clips out.

i took one clip off of each cap- 4 per end and soaked in gasoline and then penetrating oil for about 16 hours. i smacked the caps with a socket and 28 oz. hammer till the socket broke and only budged the cap about 1/4"
These may have been the original joints?! the driveshaft shop thinks they are.. 250k miles? is that possible? theyre defintitely toyota though..
also- the photos in the link you sent were of a much smaller driveshaft and u-joint than what i have...

Oh yeah, they can last that long. Finally had to change mine when I found out the driveline was bowed.

Shop sounds like a good place; recommend 'em in the other section once you get yer stuff back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I used a big bench vice to press them out, after I pulled the clips off.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
when I pressed mine out the caps were so frozen in the shaft that the tabs bent and I had to replace the shaft yoke end. but if you got it to move at all the method mentioned above does work wonders.

a cutting torch makes easy work of them.

and yes they can last 250k
mine went out about 215k mudding and sand and lots of creek running.

the toyota u joints are the best replacement to use if you can get them. there worth the extra that the stealer(dealer)charges for them
