Toyota tested the SUV market in the states with these. They contracted out to a few companies to make them based on the pickup platform. People liked them so they started building the 4-Runner, the rest is history. They did the same thing with 4 x 4 Pickups before 79, I think they had Dana 30 axles under them and some type of divorced T-case!!!!
