Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have to haul several loads of dirt for my father and was wondering if someone can give me a general idea about how much dirt I can fit in my '04 XCab V6 SR5. Manual says 1480 pounds, but that doesn't help me much since we never got around to purchasing that gigantic scale. I figured we would load until we got about 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the suspension stops.

I really need to make as few trips as I can. I don't know if there is a weight difference in dirt, but I'm hauling fill dirt, not clay or that fancy topsoil (if that makes a difference). It'll be slightly moist.

Thanks!

The only thing that I can tell ya is to shovel some in and take a look. Then shovel some more. If any thing I would be conservative. You don't want some over zelous cop to stop ya, and make a big deal out of how much you have loaded in the truck.

My suggestion is since you can't weigh the dirt, is shovel as much as your suspension allows. Look underneath at the rubber snubbers on the frame over your rear axle and make sure it doesn't bottom out on the axle/leaf. I'd leave at least an 1" minumum if you need to travel far. Shovel as much as you can as close to the front of the cab for better weight distribution. A little trick I learned from hauling dirt and gravel over the years is...lay a large tarp inside the bed and shovel everything onto the trap....as the load lightens...you can pull the tarp back and have easier access to the material....plus it makes for an easier clean-up....
