A couple of tricks... put a wrench on one of the ring gear bolts and rotate the ring gear so the wrench bumps up against the housing as if to tighten the bolt. now grab the pinion and rotate. This should help lift the carrier up and out enough to grab it.

You can also turn an old shop rag through the gears -- more of the 'lift' of which Rob speaks.

Regardless, put a couple layers of old carpet or heavy carboard on the floor so you don't ding the floor or the teeth when the carrier finally ejects.
