I got it all done tonight. Both axles strip down. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]
Here is my little helper.
[Linked Image]
Here are them heavy <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> brake drums. [Linked Image]

Now here are a few ??? for you. Should I cut off all the shock mounts on these axles? They are not going to be in the same place are they? In the picture with the drums, I need to keep the hubs. How do I get the hubs off the drums? I know that they are held on with the wheel lugs. Do I just knuck the lugs though and just buy new lugs?

I used the tech from pirate on the tear down of the dana 60. I don't know how in the world that guy pried the lower cap off with a screw driver but I had to beat the heck out of it with a BFH and a chissle. that is what took the longest time tonight. But I won.lol

Later,
Daniel

Wow Daniel, talk about bullet proof drive train! you must have a bundle of money to feed that army of pugs <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
my grandmother raised pugs, know all about the little flat nosed snorters!

That trooper is going to look monster when done.

by the way, with 60s under the trooper, you may want to avoid getting airborne. The body will stay up, but the drive train will stay planted on the ground! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

how are you doing the shocks? do you plan on using the stock uppers mounts on the frame? or are you going to angle the shocks inboard? in any case, you're probably not going to use the lower mounts exactly where they are, i'd say you're pretty safe chopping those off now while you're cleaning up the axle.

yes, they are held on by the lugs. you'll want to knock those out. you should be able to do so without damaging the lugs so you can reuse them. if you don't have a press, just start a nut on there and hammer on that so you don't damage the threads. even after the lugs are out, due to the amount of rust, it still may take some effort to seperate the drum/hub.

Nope nothing stock left on the frame. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> I thought that was going to be your answer but just wanted to double check. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Yes that is what I thought. Now my only problem I see here is that the lug nuts go on tight, so in order to get the lugs flush to smack them through I nead to use the lug wrinch. How am I going to get the lug nut off afer they pop down? They are just going to spin around. I guess I could try one and just put a pair of vise gripes on the back side.

got all the stuff on the 14 bolt and they 60 printed out and put into folders with the little plastice pages in them.
( so i can get my greasey <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> figures all over them and still be able to read them) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Well I got the lugs out. I didn't even try to take the hubs off tonight. I thought I would get a couple of blocks of wood for the shop to put under the drums and another to drive the hubs out with. Think that should do it.

Well thanks to Paul for the pm today I find out that I should take the gears and bearings out of the axles to. Do you really feel that I need to do this? I am re gearing these axles. The only real thing here is that I don't want to mess these gears up. I could always sell them on ebay for something. Plus my rear 14 bolt has the detroit in it and I damn sure dont want to mess that one up.

I took the dana 60 cover off and just as I thought it has the 410 gears in it. So it don't matter about the front it all has to come out anyway. I took the diff main bearing cap off and the rig gear and carrier just don't want to come out. How do you guys get these out with out messing anything up? Also when and how do I get the pinion off? Do I need to take that off before I take the carrie off?

PS: thanks paul for getting me that info. it doesd help.lol

Thanks,
Daniel

If the axles are out and the main caps are off the carrier should just pry out. I wouldn't take any chances on getting that stuff sandblasted. Take anything out that's not going in the junk pile. You'd be surprised where that sand can get.

WTF, why can I never see your pictures. All I'm getting is a white dot where the picture is supposed to be.

Daniel, the front carrier should just come out after you get the two bearing caps removed. Now, this won't be easy without a case spreader. A couple of tricks... put a wrench on one of the ring gear bolts and rotate the ring gear so the wrench bumps up against the housing as if to tighten the bolt. now grab the pinion and rotate. This should help lift the carrier up and out enough to grab it. If that doesn't work, i've been known to wrap a piece of webbing or rope around it, have one person pull and another person catch. again, without a case spreader, its not going to come out easy.
