Need a Spot
Got an 89 trooper 2.6 auto trans with the manual hubs.It's a daily driver but the wife doesnt like to lock the hubs.She wants to shift into 4 like in my truck 90 2.8 5spd with auto hubs.Will a set of auto hubs fit on this or do I need to change axles?Also I've noticed that the front driveshaft will turn if i run the truck with the back tires off the ground(looking for a driveshaft vibration)Will this cause a problem with the hubs locking?

If my understanding is correct, you can simply drive around with the hubs locked in, then shift into 4wd whenever you want. It's just like having auto hubs. The downside, of course, is that you're still spinning parts you don't need, dropping your gas mileage, and putting unnecessary wear on your CV boots.

Maybe you could convince her to compromise; leave the hubs unlocked when you know you won't need them (during the summer or on road trips, for instance) and locked in when you might (winter driving or 4wheeling trips).

Actually that's not quite how an auto hub works. When you are in two wheel drive, you are not spinning the cv's.

The only time you would be spinning the cv's is if you are in 4wd. But, when you shift back into 2wd you have to back up a short distance to "unlock" the hubs. If you do not do this step you will spin your cv's until you do reverse direction enough for them to unlock.

So really there is no real wear and tear on your cv's on everyday driving with the auto hubs.

The only trucks that have wear in 2wd, are the 98 and up Zu's. They have drive flanges that directly attach the cv joints to the wheels. This configuration will have your cv's spinning in 2wd or 4wd.

Right, that's "the downside" of just locking the manual hubs that COTrooper mentioned... Just didn't clarify that this would be the downside of just locking the manual hubs instead of converting to auto hubs.

That being said, there should be many people out there that have the auto hubs just lying around rotting, unless they all threw them out... Someone should be able to send you a set. *If* this is a street-only truck, you'd honestly be better off with the auto hubs anyway, since there's really very little downside to them on the street. On the trail however, they can cause you problems because they unlock briefly when you change directions and can keep you stuck when you need them most. But if the truck never sees any trail time anyway, go with the autos...

I guess since this is a street only truck (except when it ends up in the ditch) thats the way to go.The whole point of this is so I get my truck back.She won't drive hers in the winter.Guess I'm off to e-bay
