Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have an aftermarket header from a 87 22r engine that I was thinking about swaping to my 22re. There is an O2 tap and it bolts right up to the block of course. My question is do you have to close off the air injection system that normally bolts to the stock exhaust manifold even on aftermarket 22re headers? The 22r I took it off of also had some sort of air injection tube, but was not hooked up to the exhuast. So what have you guys with headers done? Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Yes. I made my own block off plates.

I was looking in my chilton's manual and saw that the california 22re versions came with those block off plates, but the federal and canadian 22re's used the air injection setup. Did the 22rec's have the injection pipe and rail that wraped around the back of the head that connected the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold? It seems logical to me that introducing air into the exhaust would aid in complete combustion, thereby reducing CO and emissions. Then again, I'm not very logical.

My '85/22REC had the block off plates only. I think the 22Rs had the air injection plumbing that year.

My 88' CA 22RE has the air injection plumbing on the exhaust manifold.
