I had a similar problem, except I never lost power while driving.

My cables weren't bad, but the clamp that attached them to battery was. Sometimes it woudl be completely dead, id pop the hood giggle the cable and it'd be fine. Bought the new "clamp-thingy" at autozone, like $2. haven't had a problem since.
