Ever since I put bigger tires on my Trooper the speedo was off. I searched the forums and got a lot of good info. I also called Merlin and he sent me the speedo driven gear for a '91 Trooper that came stock with 31x10.50's.
The gear was noticably larger than the original one, but it fit right in the tranny housing. Bad news was that the speedometer cable was rusted to the "Speedometer driven gear bushing" (that's the name Isuzu calls the housing that the speedo cable connects to and that the driven gear shaft goes into). So with the larger gear the bushing was much harder to get installed and I ended up breaking the tab that the lone bolt goes through!
I called Merlin back and ordered a new bushing and speedo cable just to be safe. I finally did get the old cable and bushing seperated byt the bushing would not thread onto the new bushing so I am glad I had the foresight to get the new cable as well.
So this afternoon, once the snow stopped falling, I installed the new bushing, original gear and new cable. I was worried that this would turn into a big ordeal (like most of my other Isuzu projects ), but it was surprisingly easy. The only remaining issue is that I need to now rewire my fog lights because my buddy ran the wires through the extra nipple on the speedo cable firewall plug.
Even getting the dash apart was not too bad- once I figured out that the headlight switch base held the lower left section of the instrument cluster housing in place.
Only took about 90 minutes from start to finish!
