Thinking about getting an Aussie locker. Should I get front, rear, or both? Budget only allows for one at the moment. '88 4runner with IFS.

I would go front so you don't have any of the quirks unless you lock in the front hubs. If you don't have manual front hubs get some.

Don't think about it do it. J/K I guess it depends how much offroad you do but get the rear locker first that's where it will benifit the most.

OK, 1 vote for front, 1 vote for rear. According to their website, they recommend the front with IFS, if you are only going to install one. They say this will give the greatest performance increase. However, my truck is in 2 wheel drive most of the time since it is my daily driver also.

Dunno if it'll help...

But I'm planning on 'building up' an 88 4runner as my DD as well. I'd like to lock the front and rear so it'll be capable as an off-roader but will still be driveable on a daily basis. The *plan* is to put an Aussie or a detroit EZ-locker in the front, and a selectable (air or electric) in the rear if I can afford it.

I vote for the rear

The a front will put increased stress on the weakest parts of your drivetrain (the 7.5" diff, stub axles, and cv axles). In the rear end it will do a lot of good still and you are less likely to break.

The reason they say the front will result in better performance is because IFS inherantly flexes less than the rear leaf sprung axle. This means the IFS is more likely to have a tire off the ground and all the power gets sent to that free spinning wheel. Yes it will benefit more from the locker, because the tire on the ground is aloud to drive the vehicle. But unless it has the help of the rear wheels, trying to drag the truck along with one planted tire is very likely to break something.

Yes both are best, but if you are only getting one, get the rear one.

Yup and stress on the weak ifs steering compenents... Be preped to change out steering stuff like idlers and tierods alot. If you get one in the front beef up your steering with a aftermarket steering system.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
So what do you guys think of the Aussie locker. I have been looking at getting one myself. They claim that "if you can change brakes then you can install one" or something like that. Are they worth the money, or should I save up for an ARB or something of the such. I have plans for down the road, which include lift, tires, and a regear. With that in mind the aussie seems like a good budget upgrade to help increase the offroadability of a basically stock rig. When I say down the road, I mean a year or so. With all that in mind I was just wondering what the opinion of the group was about them, or if there is another budget locker that would be a better alternative.

Thanks
-Matt
