The 4.0s are stout. You'll hear lots of high-milage stories, but nothing serious going wrong. Main seal leaks are common, but easy to fix. The tube headers have gone through many design changes through the years, but all seem prone to cracking. Easy to fix by a good welder. Annoying problems, too, with the ignition system, especially the early (through '90) Renix system. High idle and crank-but-no-spark are especially common. Both easy to fix, though frustrating.

Transmissions? The AW4 auto is most common, used from 87-98, maybe later. I don't hear of problems with them, and it seems to be a very reliable and robust transmission for the XJ. I have the AW4, and I'd get it again. The later AX-15 manual transmission seem to be trouble-free. The early Peugeot BA 10/5 isn't well-liked. (more trans info here)

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello all,

DonÆt mean to highjack the thread I wasnÆt sure if I should start another thread or not, I apologize.

As you can see by my signature IÆm from the ôOTHERö board and I have basically the same questions as OFF-ROADER. I have inherited a 1994 Cherokee Country with 200k miles. The truck belonged to a family member and I know that it has never been off-road and the miles are mostly all highway miles (long trips). The exterior and interior of this truck are in great condition.
From reading this thread I would like to assume that when you mention the 4.0 engine the Country is included? Does the Country trim have anything better/worse than the other trims?

I'm also just looking for a decent daily driver, something that will be reliable and if it breaks down, easy to fix.

Thank you in advance,

I've got a line on one locally for ~$1000 (remember this is the san francisco bay area so prices are relative to that).

What goes bad on them? This one's an 89 w/ 160K miles. The seller indicate's it's on decent shape visually and mechanically "for it's age" which is what worries me.

I know... a bit of a change in directly but I've always liked these monsters. What engine/tranny options did these behemoth's come with? How upgradeable are they and what should be upgraded to make it a moderate trail capable rig (not for the con or running 44's)

I'm sure mileage aint great but I'm only driving 8 miles roundtrip to work so I'm not too worried about mileage but I'm thinking this could also be a great tow rig.

Thanks.

Dude, a Wagoneer would rock! (I've got one, too. ) The '89 should be almost identical to my '88. It will have an AMC 360 engine and a Torque Flite 727 automatic trans. Both nice. Dana 44 axles front and rear, though the front is low pinion.

There's a sweet upgrade some of the IFSJA guys are doing, and that's swaping in a GM TBI to replace the Motorcraft 2150 carb. It's about $900 from Custom EFIs, and supposed to be totally worth it. Smogging, though, might be tough. I did a TFI ignition conversion on mine, but otherwise it's stock.

For lift ideas, and many, many parts, go to BJÆs Off-Road. I think a 4" lift with 33" tires would be ideal.
