Getting the Wheeling Fever

This is the first time I ever removed the valves from my 22re. I took the keepers, retainer, spring, and seat off one valve last night, but couldn't for the life of me get the oil seal off. I thought they would just pull off by hand, so I didn't muscle it at all. How the heck do I get it off? Is there a tool or are they just suppose to come right out? By the way, I have new viton seals from EB, but the body of seal is about 2/3 the size of the stock seals. Probably doesn't matter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

they are probably hardened on there and will not come off in one piece. Mine cracked apart and were difficult to get off. Keep trying, they will come off. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I think I used a putty knife to gently pry them off.

I can twist the one I have apart around in circles, but can't lift it off it's internal seat. I tried a vice grips, but was real gentle.

If I remember right they have a small metal piece that is covered by what used to be rubber and a spring that keeps the oil from escaping. they will be hard to get off, but once you get one you will get the hang of it. Try different ones until you get the "easy" one and go from there. If you can twist it you can pop it off.

I use a catspaw to get mine off. They are on there good...but get something that will catch the underside lip and is long enough to extend over the side of the casting a quick pop with your hand will lift them free. Not in one piece (rare) so be meticulous on your cleaning and prep before tapping on the new seals. For install I use a 7/16 deep well socket...matches the outer diameter poyfectly.

I have always just used a small brass drift and a light ball peen hammer, set the head on 2 x 4's and knocked them through. This way I could inspect the valves and seats to see if I could get away with just lapping them or if I need to have them ground at a machine shop. Make sure you put the same valve back in the same hole. Machine shops used to give you a yard stick with holes drilled in it so you could keep them in order. But that was in the old days, I doubt if they still do it.

>>>*Those are steel clad, Viton inner, designed to be tapped into place.
Yep, they are right on there. Often a hefty screwdriver can tip them, and then they come of, we always rotate them a few times first which helps.
I have an old claw hammer that has a perfect shape for hooking them, too, but our shop got "hi-tech" when Tod bought a seal puller tool.
They lift straight up, once you get one or two of them it gets easier.....*EB
