This is a very good point....your tires may be different sizes.........I suggest one of two things:

1)Rotate your tires...atleast one of the rear with one of the front......see if this changes the handling.

2)measure the circumfence <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />...ugh anyways measure the outside diameter of the tires.Make a mark on the pavement and on the side of the tread block that touches the pavement.
Then drive forward 1 full turn so the mark on the lug is on the pavement,make another mark on the pavement and measure
between the marks........repeat for other side.Then divide that by pie.....this will give you a diameter of the tire.
Compare both diameters and see if they are close to the same size tires......this could explain the rear being squirelly...........

Don't measure the ht. of the tire with a tape measure because you'll get bad numbers.........measure the lenght they travel per revolution.

Depending on price, I might be getting a set of springs from the local junkyard today --- IÆm hoping that they donÆt think too highly of themà I canÆt afford more than a few fingersà and experience tells me that sometimes they want multiple arms and legs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> --- We shall see.

As for the U-bolts û I agree completely.

Tread wear shouldnÆt be a factor, since I still havenÆt worn all of the manufacturing nubs off yet. --- And rotation seems unnecessary as well, given that they barely have 1000-miles on them.

But I'll still keep this in mind - I'm not going to rule anything out as a possibility.





I donÆt really understand it eitherà but it rode significantly better that way, nonetheless.

Assuming that a buddy of mine is home today, I will be tightening those shackle bolts in a little while, before heading over to the junkyard. --- Hopefully IÆll have more to report about the handling later this evening (and maybe some good news about finding a set of springs too).

HereÆs the Updated Info:


Shortly after my last report, I headed over to PaulÆs æLittle Shack of MiraclesÆ and tightened-up the shackle bolts on both sides. --- I noticed an immediate improvement in the directional stabilityà However, as one would expect, the overall ride quality absolutely stunk.

Yesterday evening, while over at JoeÆs, I loosened them back again and pumped-up the old Ranchos in an attempt to compensate for the sloppy handling. --- This seems to be my best option until I can afford to replace the spring packs (assuming thatÆs the source of the problem). --- Stiffer shocks really isnÆt a long-term solution, by any means, but itÆll have to do for now.



What itÆs NOT:

After a close inspection of all of the related components, here are my impressionsà


It isnÆt the U-Bolts û at least not as far as I can tellà
All of the bolts are synched-up nice and tight, and there doesnÆt appear to be any slack anywhere.

It isnÆt the Center Pins û again, at least not as far as I can tellà
They seem to be tight and aligned properly, exactly as they should be.

It isnÆt the Shock Mounts or Shock Bushingsà
I checked all four corners, and everything was A-OK.


Any further investigations were thwarted by the onset of some rapidly dropping temperatures and a sudden downpour. --- Believe me; thereÆs nothing quite like having your legs sticking out from under your vehicle, when out of nowhere, a large stream of near-freezing runoff makes its way along the surface of your vehicle, and pours straight down onto your unsuspecting procreation zone! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> --- Due to the sudden and completely startling appearance of this dreadfully cold water, I very nearly bashed my head against the axle! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

While looking around under there this weekend, I did discover the source of at least one of my noisesà

Apparently, when my leaf springs open-up during articulation, the first leaf below the main spring is catching an edge on the forward spring hangerà When everything levels out again, the leaf goes back into positionà with a big ôTHUD!ö
