A 12 bolt? I'm assuming you directed that at me, but my rodeo has the same rear end as yours, unless some sort of mutagenic swamp gas wafted into the factory that day......

So, I take it that the aftermarket sealed bearing types are not as sturdy as the OEM?

If the handling improves as much as smiley's butt-o-meter says it does, this is definitely interesting me. I'm pretty darn picky about handling myself, and would be willing to put some work into it.

I would want to do the work myself, but hearing the words "pressed on" makes my humble garage (and me) quake. Rob G says this is a royal pain to get the seals on right. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? I'm sure that quite a few people have done it, because it seems to be a very common problem with our D44's. Or is this a pandora's box that I don't want to open at any cost?

Body Damage is Cool
Bob, before you start to tackle,a leaky axle seal.
Check to see if the breather on top of the diff. is not clogged up.If it is it will create pressure inside of the diff. and leak out of the axleseals.
Pull the hose off of the rearend and blow thru it if you can't blow thru it it's clogged.....probably with mud.

ANother question...

Did they replace this bearing with an identical tapered roller bearing and seperate race?

YES...

The bearings that came out of my 1997 Rodeo were manufactured by Timkin
(these were presumably the originals - I have no reason to think otherwise)

The replacements were Timkin æSet 10Æ
(which included: a Tapered Bearing, a Race, and an Inner Retaining Ring / Press-Fit Collar)

Everything went together, just like it was beforeà

The old Bearings and Retaining Rings were cut-off if the axle shafts. --- The old Seals were removed and replaced with the new ones. --- The new Bearings and Retaining Rings were pressed-on. --- The new Races were placed into the axle tube openingsà And then the shafts were re-installed.

Bud-da-Bing

SIDE NOTE:
I just got off of the phone with Rubo, and I believe he pretty much thinks IÆm nuts - because according to HIM, there is not a C-clip located immediately behind the Inner Retaining Ring / Press-Fit Collar on my axle shaftsà However, I was standing right there when one of them was removedà In fact, when it came off, it flew-over and hit me in the shin.

Until our conversation just now, I simply assumed that ALL Isuzu D-44s had this C-clipà But if Rubo is right, apparently it would seem that mine is the odd duck.

Sorry there, Bobà
In your signature, it does very clearly state that you drive a 1997 Rodeo. [Linked Image]

Well, IÆve been accused of having an almost paranormal sensitivity to all-things mechanically creaky, squeaky, and otherwise basically un-noticed by othersà however, ANYONE - no matter what the degree their perceptive powers û would have immediately been able to tell the difference between the Before & After on this one.

Just pretend for a moment that you are a one-gallon can of paint, and they just put you into the shaker machine. --- Now, compare that to the movement that you experience while riding in someoneÆs vehicle, from the store to your new home.

No æButt-O-MeterÆ required - ItÆs darn-near that much of a difference!

I wish I could answer this oneà

Personally, this was a job that I was gladly willing to turn-over to a professionalà
Of course, IÆm very lucky to have such a good and reputable shop for such occasionsà Not everyone is as fortunate.

Either way: Good luck!

I'm actually relieved to hear it - for a minute there, I thought I was loosing it - but since Rubo will be helping me work on my rig soon, I should probably refrain from celebration.
