my money would be on a used kia, prolly a spectra gsx hatchback. They have decent power to weight ratio, and are cheap. the second owner would have a 5 year 60000 mile bumper to bumper warrenty on the thing. I picked up my 02 spectra with 29k miles on it for 5 grand last spring, so you would be saving your self a bunch of money.
