My God, has it come to this? I was trying to purchase another Wedco gas jerry can. By far, the best jerry can I've ever had. Never leaks a drop and doesn't smell or anything. Much better than the cheap jerry cans you typically find for sale. Anyway, the place that I used to buy them from, no longer sell them. No explaination why. I can find them on the net at other sources, but they indicate that they will not sell or ship these gas cans to Kalifornia, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. Are gas cans illegal in those states? I'm wondering if maybe that's why it's becoming harder for me to find these. Edit: I did some research. Apparently, you can only purchase, CARB complient gas cans in these states. I'm not exactly sure what this means, but from the ones I've seen, they appear to have plastic caps that probably don't seal as well as the original cans. I don't quite understand the purpose though. Why the hell do you need to emissions regulate a freaking gas can!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> Here's a piece of crap CARB complient gas can: Here's a "real" gas can designed the way they should be. Totally air tight:

Have you tried www.4x4connection.com ? They still sell jerry cans to the best of my knowledge. Nevermind they are the plastic TJM ones. Must have been a fire code change or something. Army/Navy stores still sell the old school gas cans though.

Yup, I work part time at a hardware store and we CANNOT get a standard gas can (New regulation that is now effective in a few states).. Instead the new ones have a spring loaded valve on the nozzle which is considered "spill proof", yeah right. Basically its just a pain in the ass and the cans are 2 times the cost.

Added plus is that the CARB-approved cans also leak, at least the caps do. I've heard of folks getting the approved cans then finding an out-of-state supplier for a "replacement" cap.
Also, as I recall, certain states frown on having full jerry cans carried externally on the vehicle, like on a rear bumper mounted carrier.

Texas still sells the regular ones. I got mine from there even after the law. Has the old spout. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> But you better hurry http://www.rentalpulse.com/article.asp?ARTID=1012Funny that the new CARB ones leak and the old ones don't. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Not to "burn" up the party here. But storing gasoline is actually kinda dangerous. The can's that don't "vent" or don't leak as we all know it, tend to build up lots of pressure on warm days. All you need is a cigerette in your mouth when you open the thing...and all those fumes rush out....Mmmmm...fire warm! There's also the environmental effects of the gas fumes. Gasonline fumes make CFC's look envorinmentally freindly. And, if you have a gas tank attached to the outside of your car....you DON'T want to get in an accident. You might as well spray gasoline all over everything before the accident....the aftermath is kinda grim actually.
Anyway....those are the reasons that states frown on externally carried gas cans...and some have banned them.

Yup, I had to have the good one shipped to my brother in Az. I believe CARB compliant means the nozzle automatically shuts off when you withdraw it from the tank. Mostly this is for lawn mower type tanks so that people don't spill gas on the ground and pollute. I guess nobody told the greenies that these same CARB gas tanks LEAK AND SPILL GAS ALL OVER THE PLACE <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />.
Which states frown on rear mounted gas tanks?
And what idiot smokes when handling gasoline?

i use one of those spring loaded cans for filling up equipment at work. they're kind of nice because of the fact that you don't spill diesel all over when you tilt the can(you can focus on picking up the 5 gallon can and not aiming the nozzle) but the lip that pushes on the nozzle is so small that it tends to slip off the filler neck and get my knuckles bashed into some jagged edges that always seem to be around the gas filler area on the machine.
and i think a vented can would do more harm to the environment than a non-vented one.
