The CARB fill nozzles are a poor design. They are designed to catch a lip in the gas tank fill neck in order to release the spring-loaded seal. Unfortunately, all of the CARB nozzles I've dealt with don't have a long enough nozzle to reach down far enough into the fill neck to activate. Instead you have to wedge them in at a weird angle or use your third hand to manually activate the nozzle to begin pouring. They also don't allow you to get the last couple of quarts of gas out of the bottom of the can without rotating the can upside-down halfway through the fill, leading to more spillage.

The worst part is that the fill nozzle is always sticking out during storage, just asking to be knocked off. They are definitely not designed to be low-profile in storage.

Avoid CARB gas cans at all costs.

And what idiot smokes when handling gasoline?

NEVER underestimate the how DUMB people can be!!!! There are something like 35 or 50 gas station explosions/fires every year 'cause some moron was smoking at the pump.

I agree!!....That's just natural selection at work....thinning the herd by taking out the weaker members.

Here in Pennsylvania they are trying to make it so you cannot do self-serve at the gas stations. I know it is already like that in New Jersey. Supposedly it is to make things safer. Somehow I think I trust myself a heck of a lot more than some minimum-wage teenager working part time pumping gas...

Ya, we are the other state that makes self-serve illegal. Personally, I'd rather pump my own gas also, just because I like to know exactly how much I'm putting in and I can't tell you how many times attendents have overfilled my tank and gotten gas everywhere. Not to mention the frustration of having to sit there and wait...and wait....and wait...for the attendent to get to me, when I could have put my card in, pumped my gas and been down the road by then.

On the flip side, at least it provides "some" extra jobs in our new era of "jobless recovery economies".

I've historically been for the law banning self-serve for the job reason, but I think if it comes up again, I'll support allowing self-serve. But I won't be under the illusion that it will make our gas cheaper. I know that's a load of crap of they try to sell us to pass a new law.

Not to "burn" up the party here. But storing gasoline is actually kinda dangerous. The can's that don't "vent" or don't leak as we all know it, tend to build up lots of pressure on warm days. All you need is a cigerette in your mouth when you open the thing...and all those fumes rush out....Mmmmm...fire warm! There's also the environmental effects of the gas fumes. Gasonline fumes make CFC's look envorinmentally freindly. And, if you have a gas tank attached to the outside of your car....you DON'T want to get in an accident. You might as well spray gasoline all over everything before the accident....the aftermath is kinda grim actually.

Anyway....those are the reasons that states frown on externally carried gas cans...and some have banned them.

What I like about the original design Wedco cans, I believe based on the Nato can design, is that they are very safe. Much safer than any plastic can, or basic metal jerry can or even the CARB complient cans. They seal air tight, unlike the other cans, which can leak vapors through the rubber seals or don't even have a seal at all.

Because they seal air tight, they are safe to store inside the vehicle, in my opinion. I'm sure no one would actually recommend this, but if you have to store a gas can inside, this is definately the one to do it, because they just plain do not leak, period. And they are super heavy duty welded construction.

One thing I would not do is store a can inside my vehicle on an extremely hot day. I learned my lesson, but my Wedco can saved the day. The gan bowed out in all directions and no doubt would have exploded had it been any other design, but mine held together. Destroyed the can, but didn't leak a drop or a vapor. The lesson here is never fill the can to the top or leave it locked inside a vehicle in the summer time.

You definately take a risk when storing gas cans. I personally have mine mounted high up on the bumper, so that if I am rear ended, the car is less likely to hit the gas can. Or I store them in the back of the bed where they aren't anymore likely to cause problems than my regular stock gas tank. I also only carry what I need, usually not more than one 5 gallon can.

Not everyone needs extra gas cans, but for what I do and where I go, I do.

We live in a sad time, that everything needs to made "safe" for us, to the point that someday soon, we won't be allowed to leave our houses without government licensing and approval.....and helmets.

The hassles of gas cans it what motivated me to stick in the NWMP aux. fuel tank. Gives 13 extra gallons, its all properly vented into the existing system, tucked up into the frame rails and pretty safe.

Actually, the more gas in the can, the less it will expand. The fluid won't expand, but the vapors in the empty part of the can will.

That's a very interesting point.

Still considering that route. Been debating on it for years. My main motivation for avoiding it is that I like having my spare under the truck. I know that you still mount the spare with the gas tank, but it seems to me that it hangs down lower than I'd like.
