My God, has it come to this?

Yes, it has in many states. The new regulations are from emissions of uncapped gas cans sitting in sheds evaporating. How real that concern is, is subject to debate. So the new cans automatically seal shut.

The cheap ones like Blitz, sold at Walmart and the like, are truly horrible to use. They splash gas everywhere. The expensive and hard to find Eagle brand are metal, have a nice external funnel, and work well. In fact, there are jerry can models of this new type of can.

The new regulations are a throwback to the old military style that automatically snap the lid shut.

Supposedly these plastic cans are pretty good and don't leak:

Although, I've heard from at least 1 person that they do leak.

If you have to ask about a SAS, you're not ready for it.

Not to "burn" up the party here. But storing gasoline is actually kinda dangerous. All you need is a cigerette in your mouth when you open the thing...and all those fumes rush out....Mmmmm...fire warm! There's also the environmental effects of the gas fumes. Gasonline fumes make CFC's look envorinmentally freindly. And, if you have a gas tank attached to the outside of your car....you DON'T want to get in an accident. You might as well spray gasoline all over everything before the accident....the aftermath is kinda grim actually.

Hummm... Fumes... If youÆre CAN is Air Tight.. then the harmful fumes arenÆt going into the air are they?
I really I agree anyone who smokes should be smart enough to know that fire and Gas mix a little TOO well.. And I have yet to hear of anyone who has had a Jerry can EXPLODE on the back of their truck... But seems a little better to blow on the back than inside if you know what I mean. As for Gas storage being bad for the environment! See all those vent pipes in the back of you local Gas station?

I watched a guy try to fill his boat tank with one of those new cans while he was dockedà. Must have spilled half the can into the lakeà. From the leaky piece of crap!

Hey I hug a Tree at least once a dayà This bureaucratic EPA crap is just a way to extort more money out of the publicà After allà

Replace the can every year cuz itÆs rottenà You through the thing into the landfill = Polluting. You purchase a new one = Cash flow to the manufacture thatÆs polluting to manufacture more of them + Plastic comes from Oil = More pollution. + The government controls oil = More money for the bureaucrats making these laws. + puts more money into China where itÆs most likely manufactured.

Or you buy a steel one that lasts practically for ever. The people making the laws donÆt profit. And you help keep the US foundry folks in jobs. And if and when you toss the old can. Steel biodegrades about 50000 Times faster that Plasticà.

Hummmmmmmmmàà.

Just a note... Not that anyone really cares about this. I just got a little board and decided to relate the part of Physics class I wasnÆt sleeping through. (Hey we were learning how to blow stuff up)

Gas under pressure will stay liquid If there is no Air for it to evaporate into. Just keep the temperature at or below the flash point of the product. If you get it really hot the liquid will expand and the storage container will become stressed. If your container vents the evaporated gasses escape, more air comes in, more gasses escape. ItÆs a cycle. Eventually all the gas has evaporated into the atmosphere. Keep it air tight and cool and only the amount of particulates that can saturate the remaining air will flash out of the liquid. After the remaining air is saturated the container is positively pressurized and no more will evaporate. Of course the container must be at least as strong as the pressure inside. (IE) The Steel Nato cans. The guy that left his IN the car proved that it was safer than the plastic. Because the explosive fumes didnÆt fill the storage compartment. They expanded into the can witch expanded its self to accommodate the expanding gasses inside without rupturing. Had it been a venting plastic can the fumes would have filled the storage compartment and most likely exploded or gassed the guy as he opened the car door.

I know, I know IÆm gona get a bunch of negative feedback for this post.

Ok ok Ill shut up now!

Like I said, the cheap ones, particularly those made by Blitz, are junk. There are others that are fine. Eagle makes some superb ones.

No, it's just some rather misguided concerns by folks who generally have never held a gas can. There's no intent to extort.

The fluid won't expand, but the vapors in the empty part of the can will.

Fluid expands when heated also. Remove your radiator cap while the engine is hot for a demonstration.

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> That's not the fluid expanding.
By removing the cap you are allowing the fluid to become steam by introducing air in the system, which happens violently btw.
It is the steam that causes those major burns when people take the cap off a hot radiator.

He is correct, fluids expand much, much less than gasses.

Huh? Removing the cap has nothing to do with thermal expansion. When the engine is cold, there is no pressure in the cooling system. When the engine is hot, there is pressure. The coolant expands from the temperature increase, plain and simple...

Yes, fluid expands less, but he said fluid doesn't expand at all. He is wrong.

You should never completely fill a sealed container
with any liquid. The air can compress. The fluid cannot. This is why propane cylinders are never filled more than 80%. To allow for thermal exapnsion without rupturing the tank.

Sorry for the hijack.... carry on. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Carrying on...

Why not just buy the blue Wedco water can, break out the sandpaper and red spray paint, and do your part for hydrocarbons?

BTW, the greatest source of hydrocarbons is.... pine forests. That wonderful pine smell. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

They don't have different coatings inside? A guy on an xterra board was complaining his wedco red can was flaking off stuff from the inside.

[HIJACK] I just googled "pine forests and hydrocarbon" and damn if you are'nt right. I never would have guessed that.[/HIJACK]

Gas cans mounted on the rear or side of a vehicle scare me. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />
