I'd add 'timing pulley recession' to the list of possible causes for loosening.

Toby -

Interesting observation. I don't remember from my tear-down if the crank nose was a taper or a straight cut leaving a shoulder for the timing sprocket to butt against. Are you saying it chewed into a shoulder on the crank or spread up and over a taper?

Either way though the recession result could be from the timing sproket spinning on the crank after the key broke, couldn't it?

on the 4 cranks I looked at,
the 'nose' that the pulley butts into is a radiused edge, and only about 3/32" of metal actually connects- AFTER the pully's smushed into conformance with the (much harder) crank.

Which reminds me- I should go retorque mine soon, eh?

I just had mine off for the timing belt job. No way to torque it properly and it's the old one too. I really need to order the new one.

Anyway, it's on there about this tight;
Btbtbtbt, btbtb, btbtb, btbtbtbtbtbbtbtbtbttbtbtbtb.

Hope it holds.

Maybe we need to add "crank bolt torque check" to the list of yearly routine maintenance.

That's probably not a bad idea at all, but I haven't heard of anyone on this forum that has experienced a problem after replacing the old bolt with the new one, have you? Does that mean that:
1) the new bolt is superior?
2) we're more accurate than the factory was?
3) it takes 10-15 years for the dang thing to blow up?

Beats the Hell outta me, Lieutenant.

'Bout 5 bucks and a whole lotta work - but not as much as if it breaks.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - this is a $5 15min fix. It is well worth your time and money.

How many people have re-checked the torque on their crankshaft bolt through the years? However, remind me and I'll re-check mine in Aug to see if it's gone funny.

It takes far less than 15yrs for this thing to creep up. As stated, usually happens within a short period after a timing belt change. Only seems to take one episode of old crank bolt "tampering" to bring down the beast.

I'm still not clear as to the part number. I'll order it tomorrow if I can get the fer-sure right part number.

I don't remember if I have two spanner holes in my pulley or not. I think I'll check and if I do I'll get a spanner to fit and put that job on the maintenance list. Good suggestion.
