MD138069 - bolt
MD096930 - washer

Beleive it or not, the washer is more expensive than the bolt.... about $6 or so for both, if I remember correctly.

If it's undamaged, you can reuse the old washer.

Mine had 2 holes in it but no threads.

Wait, . . . . spanner... I get it. I had to use a special puller in order to get the pulley off. Didn't occur to me that those holes were for holding the pulley while torquing the bolt. It all makes sense now.

Maybe, but they're different - have you seen by how much?

'Fess up - what'd you do with the brake cleaner that was left over from cleaning the VLAs?

I'm in Kalifornia. We can't get that kind of brake cleaner anymore .

The stuff we get won't even kill black widows (unless you set it on fire ). It jujst stuns them for a few minutes and they get really cold. Then they run away.

No way to torque it properly ....Anyway, it's on there about this tight; Btbtbtbt, btbtb, btbtb, btbtbtbtbtbbtbtbtbttbtbtbtb

Without a means of strapping down the harmonic balancer in order to apply proper torque to the bolt (nor the desire to rig up a strap with an old serpentine belt)- im sure that is VERY COMMON with many shops out there. Perhaps even a few more bttbbtb's that you

It's only temporary until I get the new bolt. Then I'll get a new set of belts too and I'll do it right.

I spent most of my day off working on this thing at work. I even wore strreet clothes instead of a company provided uniform to make sure they would understand I'm not working today. Took 7 hours today plus the 4 or 5 I spent on Saturday to get it done.

I did a bunch of other little things too though.

You wouldn't believe what I found when I got the timing belt cover off!

I'll be posting about that soon.

I took a look at the recall bulletin and apparently the correct replacement bolt depends on when the engine was produced.

http://www.monterosport.net/2001.pdf

Note that this bulletin applies to the following Montero's w/3.0 liter engines:

1992 - 1996 Montero's produced between 1/91-1/96
1997 - 1999 Montero SPORT'S produced between 8/96-3/99

Per the bulletin, the part number for the crank bolt is as follows:

* engines produced 10/91 - 5/94: Part # MD138069
* all other post-5/94 engines affected by this recall: Part # MD172725

For 3.0 liter Montero's produced pre-10/91, the correct part number would appear to be MD138069.

*** Just another important reminder, per the Mitsubishi Bulletin, if you are planning to install the crank bolt, be sure to clean the bolt and washer, and also blow out the bolt-hole (in the crank) w/compressed air. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: APPLY ENGINE OIL TO THE BOLT THREADS (including bolt head face and washer) BEFORE INSTALLATION ... this will help ensure that the proper torque is achieved.

I learned of this recall after joining this forum and am very thankful for it. I will be checking my own 1990 Mitsubishi which I purchased several years ago to see whether it stll has the old-style bolt ... if it does have the old-style bolt, I'll at least make sure it's tight for now, and will plan on installing the new bolt.

Thanks,

Alex
