I took a look at the recall bulletin and apparently the correct replacement bolt depends on when the engine was produced.

http://www.monterosport.net/2001.pdf

Note that this bulletin applies to the following Montero's w/3.0 liter engines:

1992 - 1996 Montero's produced between 1/91-1/96
1997 - 1999 Montero SPORT'S produced between 8/96-3/99

Per the bulletin, the part number for the crank bolt is as follows:

* engines produced 10/91 - 5/94: Part # MD138069
* all other post-5/94 engines affected by this recall: Part # MD172725

For 3.0 liter Montero's produced pre-10/91, the correct part number would appear to be MD138069.

*** Just another important reminder, per the Mitsubishi Bulletin, if you are planning to install the crank bolt, be sure to clean the bolt and washer, and also blow out the bolt-hole (in the crank) w/compressed air. ALSO VERY IMPORTANT: APPLY ENGINE OIL TO THE BOLT THREADS (including bolt head face and washer) BEFORE INSTALLATION ... this will help ensure that the proper torque is achieved.

I learned of this recall after joining this forum and am very thankful for it. I will be checking my own 1990 Mitsubishi which I purchased several years ago to see whether it stll has the old-style bolt ... if it does have the old-style bolt, I'll at least make sure it's tight for now, and will plan on installing the new bolt.

Thanks,

Alex
