in Los Angeles, people will leave their cars running while they run into 7-11 to buy beer or whatever.

I don't agree with doing that. That's just asking to get your car stolen. Now, warming it up in the winter, in your own driveway, sure. I do it all the time. The winter here in Northern Canada get quite cold, so warming your car/truck in Jan/Feb is a must.

Just a day before this post, I had an extra key cut to expressly leave my engine running when I need to leave the vehicle temporarily. The new key now goes on the other end of my detachable key ring. Now, when I need to exit the vehicle running, I just detach the second key and leave my Trooper locked and running. And, as others have said before me, this is ONLY done during the very cold periods in the Winter. I guess, breaking another law in Colorado, but, making it much more difficult for the casual puffer nabber.

Randy,

Yeah, people just aren't too bright out here. In Wisconsin, we used to let the cars warm up in the morning before going to church or whatever, but that was Wisconsin. I was pretty suprised to see how often people leave their cars running in the middle of 51st and Ghetto.

Body Damage is Cool
I heard that theres some crazy law that if the keys are in the car and its unlocked, when someone steals it, it is only 'unauthorized use'. As opposed to them breaking, entering, and hotwiring would be grand theft auto. So thats another good reason not to puff.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm not sure if we have the same laws here in Washington, because I've let my amigo warm up for quite a while and did not come out till some cops pull over and waited for me to tell me not to do that, or may be they were just some cool cops because it happened to me more than twice.

hahaha,, I take it that's a bad area, ie: Ghetto. I can't beleive people are that stuned.
I live in a pretty good part of our country, and I wouldn't leave my Trooper running while I was in a store, even if it was for only a few seconds. Not worth the chance.

In California, it's still grand theft auto if somebody takes your ride with the keys in the ignition, the doors unlocked and the engine running.

To clear up a few questions,
Yes the rodeo was stolen, we're hoping it shows up later (2 other vehicles have been stolen recently, and both were found in the same empty lot about 10 days after being stolen).

According to a local police officer, the puffing ordinance was enacted strictly because leaving the car running makes it so easy to steal. (again approx 70% of vehicle stolen were left running) Just hop in and drive away.

I'm not sure how it applies to remote start units where the vehicle remains unable to be driven with out a key.

Side note, When my neighbor contacted the police right after the theft, she was informed that it would be at least two hours or possibly much later before an officer stopped by. Since the keys were in the car there wasn't much for an officer to do on-scene. Where's Lenny Brisco when you need him?

Its not only about leaving the car running so it can get stolen, You are also polluting. I cant remember who said it ,but you only need to let your car warm up 10-15 secs to get the oil running through it.

It's not the oil I'm worried about.... it's the shivering sitting on freezing leather seats.... I let mine warm up, usually I am out shoveling snow or something at the same time though.

Roll Me Over
Leather? Whine, whine, whine! ( )

I've got the original cloth.
Covered with a "seat springy" thing.
Covered with a car seat cover.
Covered with a beach towel. (driver side only--never have many passengers; something about embarrassment)

Hey, it makes me look a few inches taller!

I can't pick on you too much...when I bought the Rodeo, I wanted leather but waited too long and couldn't get a factory order any more and had to search for available stock.

My wouldn't know what to think if it sat on leather. Actually, yes it would. It would think either I was a passenger. or I was in the wrong car. Really wrong--I don't think they made leather Amigo's.

[color:"white"]? 04 Rodeo DI ?[/color] 75k mi, body damage on the 1st weekend I got it.
