Need a Spot
I have an 87 4Runner SR5 22re. I have been wanting to install an air intake but can't seem to find any that are made for an 87 with either K&N or Ram Air. Am I looking in the wrong place? Does anyone have any info on where I might be able to purchase one for my rig?

WHY??? There are no gains to be had by adding one of those "intake" setups. The way to get power on these engines is by a staged exhaust, cam and oversized valve setup. Then look into an overbored throttle body and supra AFM if you still want more.

Changing out the air intake tube does not help you past the 2 restrictive points... The AFM and throttle body.

My K&N is one of my biggest regrets on spending money.

That being said I found these:

Summit Racing - K&N

4 Wheel Parts has one for an 88 (they didn't have it listed for '87s for some reason)(K/N57-9008): 4 Wheel Parts - K&N 2.4

'89 3.0 4Rnr: Jacob's Electronics, K&N, CF Dual Frict, 4:56 w/ Truetracs, 33 BFG AT/KOs, Cascade Audio, Pro-Comp 4" susp & 2" body (previous owner)

I know, a lot of wasted time and money ... if I knew then what I know now....

Why is it called a "cold-air" intake when it draws hot air from under the hood? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

In stock form, the 22RE air box does pull air from out in front of the radiator. And unless you add baffles and ducting, one of those cone filter setups will pull hot air from under the hood. My original snorkel setup ran under... hot air intake (only used when needed). My new intake setup pulls cool air in from the cowl:

Similar to Oop's setup but on the opposite side. I inserted the elbow into the cowl then added two 1/2" tubes for drains (to the left of the intake tube) and foamed in the area to seal it off from the wheel well:

Final version will have the long tube cut off and mated to a Safari snorkel outside the fender (special LHD-Hilux version from Australia).

Aren't there other modifications to the air box that can be done that add to the potential air flow besides the open air element kits? (drop in Amsoil or K&N filters, drilling holes near the fender - even though it's hot air again, or making a snorkel).

I've been considering putting my original intake back in with a drop in filter &/or holes or snorkel so I'm very interested everyone's opinions. (I do like mud)

Oh contra!!... in order to compliment the oversized valves/cam and throttle bodies/ exhaust, you'll need to do intake work as well... in order to make HP you need to move air... the internal combustion engine is essentially an air pump, overly restricted intakes equals loss of power as does overly restricted exhaust... it's all in the balance and systems interaction, similar to an orchestra where the instruments work together in harmony, opposed to just played music on an individual basesà certainly doing one without the other yields nothing!!!

It is my understanding that he intends to put this on a stock or near stock engine... This will give almost no gains. Now, in your case, you need it for the added mods. I believe (off the top of my head) you have an overbored throttle body, ported intake, AFM from a larger engine, OS valves, cam, ehxaust, etc...

I still say put the money elsewhere... The intake will disappoint him, and the same $250 could get him a cam and valve setup that will give actual gains, not just *bling*. Save the intake for later...
