Getting the Wheeling Fever
2001 4Runner automatic. Stopped running today. Engine will start and run fine till I shift into any gear. Then the engine will stop. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you try to give it a little gas while shifting will it stay running?

No, it quits no matter how fast the engine is running when you put it in gear.

Lockup solenoid may be stuck or the trans pump has siezed. Either way you are probably looking at a trip to the dealership. Do you hear any loud clicking when shifting?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
It made a rough shift from 1st to 2nd when I first started out this morning, but that was all. Like a thump. 5 miles later it stopped while at a red light. I just had it towed to a local tranny shop. They will look at it tomorrow.

It took the tranny shop until yesterday to start checking it out. So far all solenoids seem to be OK and they are now going to pull the transmission. Suspect a broken pump?

FINALLY got it back on the road on Thursday. The problem was major. Transmission fluid cooler? was clogged (or failed) and fluid was not circulating. They had to rebuild the torque converter and transmission. Replace all clutches, o-rings, gaskets and seals. Replaced band and solenoids. They rebuilt the complete front of transmission, pump, overdrive section back to the center support. Now I'm broke. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

Ouch, that is an expensive fix.

Sounds like the tranny shop bent you over, i wonder how much of that was all necessary...
