well the wife is back in the 4x4 game, this time with an 85 pickup. we are all very excited. anywho, i have to replace the head gasket this weekend to get it running tip-top, and ive been trying to dig up some info on the procedure since i like to know what im getting into before i do something, but i have not been able to find anything. that either tells me im not looking hard enough, or its so straight forward that there is nothing ot it. right now the only thing im really worried about is reconnecting all the wire and vaccuum lines after i get the head back on. right now the general idea i have of it is -unhook and label wires/lines -remove head -get head inspected for warping and have it machined as necassary -place gasket as well as some squeezable gasket sealer -finger tighten bolts back on -torque the 10 bolts to 58 ft lbs in correct order -reconnect wires -take dogs to park.
is that the general idea or am i totally missing something?

It's fairly straightforward; what leads you replacing the HG?
ROTATE THE ENGINE TO TDC BEFORE YOU PULL THE DISTRIBUTOR
Don't forget your coolant mixed with DISTILLED water! After reservicing, turn on your heater so all the air gets burped out; leave the radiator cap off when you do so.
Exhaust manifold and intake manifold removal
Timing chain cover (check the guides before you start) there's a maintenance article in the Yota section here you can read (replacing the TC in a 22R)

Boy. Wish it WAS that simple.
Couple of gotcha's-
Hex head bolt thru intake manifold
Helicoils for fixing stripped exhaust holes. (they WILL STRIP. HELICOIL IN ADVANCE ALL OF THE EXHAUST PLACES!)
Worried about wires and vaccum lines? Take pictures.
Follow torque specs on everything.
That being said, you mention doing a HG to get it into shape. Is it blown? Are you sure? Cause if it ain't broke...

You forgot the customary :
-drink a beer
after each of those steps. So my typical list would look like this.....
-drink a beer -unhook and label wires/lines -drink a beer -remove head -drink a beer -get head inspected for warping and have it machined as necassary -drink a beer -place gasket as well as some squeezable gasket sealer -drink a beer -finger tighten bolts back on -drink a beer -torque the 10 bolts to 58 ft lbs in correct order -drink a beer -reconnect wires -drink a beer -take dogs to park. -drink a beer

Don't overlook the hidden bolt underneath the distributor hidden in a pool of oil which connects the head to the timing chain cover. I replaced my hg last year, had a big long thread about it that I think has some pretty good info in it from guys like Darin and EB. Here it is. Hope that helps.

It is strait forward. Use a Toyota gasket(Fel-Pro work aswell) and now would be a great time to upgrade to ARP head studs and a stage 1 or 2 cam. A good place to buy parts is here: This stuff is OEM http://www.europeanautomotive.com/catalog-exec/

i just picked up a haynes manual (second one i had to buy...we gave away the first one when we sold the 4runner....doh!!) anyways, i read thru it....its more work then i expected, but it does seem straight forward....i have spent so much time looking at the chevy big block in my cruiser that i just assumed that everything was as simple as it. my bad. im hoping i will be able to get it back to running tomorow afternoon. with that though, i am not 100 percent certian it is the head, i will go thru and trouble shoot as well as i know how, but according to the previous owner, the headgasket wasnt put in right and it went out recently so im stuck fixing it. oh well....it will be a nice intro to the new vehicle.

well, the deal fell thru....so right now all this info (for me at least)is moot. appearently the buddy of the guy who owns the truck felt that his 30 dollar pos jenson cd player was worth too much to him, so he went in and mangled the wires and part of the console taking it out, one of those wires being the power to the ignition, so after much anguish and thinking i said forget it, even after he dropped the price to 1500. it was a hard decision, and i lost 150 on the deal, but thats better then losing 1900 and bringing home a huge headache. anyways....the good news is we may have the perfect one waiting for us up in seattle that we are looking at tomorrow. i hope this one pans out.
