Ive had my Cj for a while now and pretty much ran all the stock AMC stuff into the ground. I pulled my tired 258 which I still have in pieces if anyone needs it. Sold my Blown T5 and D300. Now im almost finished with my SB chevy which im mating to a turbo 350 and NP205. Axles are up in the air right now but the Stock amc 20s are on it now. What issues can I expect to run into getting this motor tranny and tcase to work with my wheelbase? Also, I know my stock axles are not going to last long even with my mild 350, so what is an inexpensive "upgrade" that will hand the rugged Washington hills?

WOW! all these other posts have been answered already. HMMM wonder why no one here has tried to even tackle my question. TOO HARD?

Check the "93 Differential" post here in the tech section. BigJim has a good rundown on the Ford 8.8 axle complete with ID numbers and gear ratios. There's also the Chrysler 8.25 from Cherokee's.

I've never swapped either, but I've read of others here that have.

Your question is asked all the time, and apperantly never answered adequatly. A high power V-8 is going to need stronger axles in just stock form. I think i've seen the picture of your jeep with a decent lift and 33-35's? If you have tires that size running 4.11's to 4.56's and a V-8 and rugged mountain trails? Dana 44's in the least, maybe a ford 9" or dana 60 rear end, and at least a dana 44 front. Un forntuantly its going to cost some cahs to find the right sized ones, or have some made to your specifications. With how short the wheel base is, you might want to consider lengthing the wheel base a bit for stability and driveline lnegths. Usually low budget's don't go well with V-8's and big tires.

There's a little hotlink at the top of the page that says "Search". It's quite valuable for finding answers to topics like this that are answered with regularity.

Easiest/cheapest 44 swap with the same lug pattern would be a scout II rear end, and narrowing a 74-76 Wag front end and switching to Ford rotors and hubs, resulting in 58" wide. But as CSP said, it's all there with the search.

Thanks you guys for your input. I have in my posetion a Ford 9" rear end complete. Its free to me if I want it. Allthough I have no clue what gears are in it, I know they arent close to what im looking for. Also "I know a guy" that will build me a dana 44 front for 200$ sounds like a good buy. My ownly question is where could I find matching 4.88's for a danna 44 and a ford 9"?

P.S. Yes, my CJ is running 35 14.50 boggers.

A ford 9" is a nice axle. It's as strong or stronger than a dana 44. If you put out the money for a high pinoin 3rd memeber (why not get a locker and gears at the same time...) it would really help some of the driveline issues with tall lifts and short wheel bases.

9 inch rears are particularly cool because yo can have the third member built independant of the axle. less junk to carry and or ship.
