OK, so a guy auctions off a brand new alternator and a starter for a 2.6 on Ebay. I bid and win them at $20.00 and $25.00. When I receive them I am pretty happy. They look new.
And then I go to put the starter on. Looks way different. This guy had a 2.6 in a front wheel drive car and I have the Montero.
Mine looks like the standard starter with the shaft held in place with a half round casting and a bushing in it. Regular Bendix drive, etc. His looks like a coarser gear, internal shaft back in the starter, no half round casting on the end, and no support bushing.
So, is the front wheel drive starter on a 2.6 different than a rear wheel drive starter on a 2.6?
Or did he have a completely different engine? Like a 2.2, or 2.5?
OK, now the alternator. It has the same mounting points, but is physically bigger. I am guessing this is a higher amperage output alternator. So, my plan is to use the alternator. Should I be concerned about wire sizes?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

i thinking you got ripped on the starter... did you check his approval rating before you bought from him? btw, before you throw that alternator on there, test it for output just to make sure that its not putting out to much juice. if its all good, thats well worth overlooking the starter for a alternator thats that cheap .

If the tag is still on the Alt you can cross referance the #s to find out what the rating is. And ditto the test it (any auto parts store) and I would upgrade the wiring (primary circuit) anyway if it is a higher rated alt. I also ditto the you got ripped on the starter but worth it if the alt is better than the OEM 50-65amp.

i learned the hard way on the "oversized alternator" ... the unnamed auto store... err, checker, assured me that it would work for my powerwagon. right. worked great until the ENGINE FIRE ! melted quite abit of wiring that day... turned out to be an alternator for something different, gm 400ci if memory serves. needless to say i got a "free" upgraded brandspanken new alternator (that ran for better than 3 bills) and all the stuff i needed to repare it, plus they payed for the towing .

Racer....., As far as eBay is concerned, you only got ripped off if the seller said it would fit a Montero and it doesn't or if it isn't for ANY 2.6, that is considered "misrepresentation" and you do have recourse for that. If you need any help with the complaint process, let me know and I will guide you and see what I can do. If you paid using PayPal, you have 30 days to file with them for your money back, they basically put a hold on the funds in their PayPal account while they investigate. If they are found to be in the wrong, they will take the money from them and give it back to you. In contrast to popular belief, eBay and PayPal both are very sensitive to this thing happening and usually will side with the buyer on this type of issue!
I hope it works out, good luck!

Yamas:
I need your help! Ebay time runs out on Mar. 2nd.
I will have the alternator tested but I am sure the starter will not work.
And the Dude listed them as 2.6 parts.
So, I got screwed on the starter.
Wish I knew what it looked like before I took mine apart.

If you get stuck with the starter, see if you can take it apart and swap what you need into the old case. I have no idea if any of the parts are interchangeable, but maybe you'll get lucky.

Check out my two purchases. It says it plain and simple, Alternator and starter for Mitsubishi 2.6.
Ebay sales numbers 7959088189 and 7959087282
Cut and paste the numbers into the search box on Ebay and you will see what I bid on.
Wonder if he will refund?

"CHRYSLER MITSUBISHI starter alternator 2.5 2.6 others" "2.6 Mitsubishi engine used in many Chrysler models" "planned on keeping the car "
I could see how you would make the mistake since the seller is being vague on purpose.
You didn't get ripped off, you only paid $20. Re-sale the starter I bet you could get $50 for it.
